how to stop gurggleing on overflow

so I just set up a 90 gal reef ready that has and elbow down overflow configuration, and it makes a really loud gurggleing sound. Any ideas as to how to make it quieter?

When you mean elbow down overflow you mean the dorso I assume. You can try adjusting the hole size in the top cap, or adding a piece of tubing to extend the hole 6" away from the cap. Just needs some fine tuning with how much air your letting in with the water.

Just depends, when I first set mine up I bought 3 different caps and had differnet sized holes in each one. It took awhile to find the right combination of hole size and tubing length when the overflow finally equaled out and quieted down

Do you have it low enough so the water is just over the top of the elbow? If it's too high in the overflow, it will be noisy.
Can you take a pic?

if by gurggling you mean the water level in the overflow is lower than the 90 and its sucking to much water you can make the air hole a little bigger. start with slightly bigger and go from there. if by chance you go too big you can use tape or putty to cover part of the hole.

i dont know how you overflow is set up but also if you have a valve somewhere on the stanpip you can play with that a little bit to adjust. cuz sometimes the hole size is tough to get exactly right.

I am also trying to stop the gurgling sound in my tank. I also tried the durso modification. When I put it in it starts to overflow the tank. I have tried even removing the cap on top and it does not seem to drain as fast as it does without the durso. any tips/tricks would be much appreciated.

I have 3/4" return with a QuietOne 4000 return pump. I am using a gate valve to split the return to my refugium. I am restricting the return a little so that I can minimize the gurgle. The durso was recommended to me so I built it with 3/4" pvc. As soon as I place it on the overflow it starts to suck water down but not fast enough. I opened the gate valve in the bottom all the way and it didn't help. Doesn't make sense to me.. but I am no plumber :)

The overflow was sucking too much water, just to be clear,
I made the hole bigger on the top and that fixed the problem, thanks a lot.

glad you are good to go.

ataylo---keep in mind that a 1in bulkhead and durso is built to handle 600gph. some people can push more through them but obviously the 3/4 will be less. i dont know how much you have pumping between the two but that pump is rated for over 1000gph i think.

That makes sense. I would venture a guess that it is pushing about 850gph thru the return. I am assuming that due to the pump that I am using that I will be unable to use a durso because I can't make the hole in the tank any larger? Thanks for your help.
