How to tell if my clam is dead?

Hey all,

I think my clam is either dead or on its way out, and I am leaving town for 10 days later this afternoon. So I need to make a quick decision on wether to pull it out or leave it in.

The clam in question is a 3" teardrop maxima from LA's diver's den. I got it 2 weeks ago, and it has never really opened fully. I blame that on my majestic angel and copperband butterfly mostly. It was on the sandbed (kept jumping off the rocks) of a 90g under 250w 10K. A few days ago I moved it to my refugium (because it was being nipped). The fuge is pretty shallow (30 breeder) and the clam was placed on a shell on the sandbed directly under a 6500K 39w T5 tube (there are two over the tank).

As of this morning I decided to make a little stand out of eggcrate to get it closer to the light before I left. When I went to move it, it stayed locked about 1/2" open. I did notice two sexy shrimp hanging out on it.

Normally when I lose clams (dont ask me why I have so much experience in losing clams... thats another thread) I leave them in for a few days until the body detaches from the shell. I figure that way I know its dead. However I dont have the time to do that because I am leaving town today.

Is being locked half-open (but retracted mantle) a sign that it's dead?

My maxima died because it never open up all the way also. If it keep falling off the rock it might of streesed it out to much and died. try a different kind of clam something easyer. gigas are easy but expensive you might as well buy one it would be cheaper then lose alot of hard to care ones.
I am sure some one alts will add what they think good luck sorry about the your clam I hate to lose anything that way.

I left it in. I figure I have that cleanup crew for a reason. Maybe it will give my bristleworms and pods some food to reproduce.

Anyway, my tank sitter called on monday and said the shell was empty.
