How to test REFRACTOMETER without the tank setup??

I just bought a refractometer, and I want to test it to make sure it's working properly. I dont have my tank setup yet, so how do I test it?

take it to your LFS and ask them to test it.

There isnt one within an hours drive from here.

Make up a small mix of salt water. 1/2 cup of salt mixed with 1 gallon of water will give you a Specific gravity of 1.022. Does your refractometer have ATC. Automatic Temp Compensation. If not get the temp of the water and adjust your readings accordingly.

I believe you can start with distilled water, and use that to calibrate your meter by setting it on 0.

Mixup you salt water and see how like above with 1/2 cup of salt and 1 gallon of water. Then see what it reads.
