How's my rock work look?

Took some of the rock out. Gives me more real estate on the sand bed. Back is open but I'm not sure if I like it or not. It's hard to get a good look.

My opinion is it's a little too linear.

I would make the silluette more mountain rangeish with peaks and valleys rather than a straight line.

Keeping one side taller than the other will keep it interesting.

Remember nothing in nature is similar. So having things equal on both sides or making straight lines looks man made.

That's just my opinion, if you like it then who cares what anyone else thinks.

getting there. yeah the two taller rocks on the left isnt working. remember if you are going to get softies lps ect the usually come mounted on a rock so to much rock also isnt good

Items i considered when making mine. 1. think of the corals you will be mounting. Have some low, middle and high spots that will work for mounting areas. 2. think of places for fish to hide/sleep. 3. once you like it, keep it and who cares what anyone else says

good luck and have fun

You can have too big of a skimmer to the point where the foam will not become stable enough where it will not make it up the skimmer neck and it just sits in the neck.
People are wrong when they say you cant oversize a skimmer.

I have no idea I yours is oversized though. I am just addressing the the derailment above.

To the op topic the rock work needs to be pleasing to you. As your tank matures you really don't see it much at all anyway and I think people worry to much about how it looks. To me it is better to make it more functional.

That means keeping it away from the glass to make it more easy to keep the glass clean. You may want to make sure the rock is far enough from the sides and back to pass a magnetic glass cleaner.

Keeping it open so it does not impede flow to much. This will also help keep detritus suspended.

Have a few caves for fish to hide.

Having sufficient places to put corals.

Have enough open space to for fish that like to swim out in the open.

A 40 breeder is a nice tank for aquascaping too.. The biggest mistake I see is people having to much live rock.

Final layout. I'm happy with this. It's what I wanted to begin with actually. I threw some rock out. Some of it had so much dying crap that it smelled HORRIBLE. I took that out of the tank. I ordered aquacultured rock to seed my dry rock, biggest mistake I have made. one of my tunzes seized up so I have another coming Monday. All my equipment has been in the basement for 3 years lol so 2 used tunze power heads and an jbj auto top off is all that doesn't work, I think I'm pretty lucky. Anyway, the final layout of my rock!

Night and day difference. Good job. May need to tweak it slightly so that your algae cleaner can get to all of the tank wall surfaces.
