Im trying to stay on track with what I want later on in my reef tank. So no damsels and probably no chromis.

So my question is. How would a yellow clown goby be as a first fish?

That would be a perfect fish to have for a first fish. If you plan on having any SPS they can nip at it. I would just watch him clsely once that time comes.

Very good choice, damage to SPS will be negligible if any at all - these fish are tiny...good personality

i used a snow flake eel and a nijer trigger to cycle with. I had tested the water like a mainac and used biozyme. I am by no way an expert but that is just what had worked for me. After 4 weeks my tank is fully cycled and seems to me go SO FAR.

If you are starting a reef system, you do not need 'starter fish' such as damsels etc.

Live rock contains MORE than enough of the materials to cycle a tank.

The use of 'starter fish' died years ago...

Agreed. If you're asking "my tank is done and I want to know what fish are easy to keep" starter fish, then I think your idea is great. If you're thinking "I want a fish that will facilitate the spikes," then it's just not necessary.

You won't see me hugging any trees but I still think it's cruel to do that with fish. (Cycle the tank with 'em in there, that is.)

No I would never put in a fish during my cycle... Its inhumane....

Im just asking as what fish to start with AFTER my cycle is complete.

what about a clown, they are good begginer fish and everyone seems to like them, i like white stripe maroons best. Liveaquaria is down, but the have a section for good beginer fish.

Yes the grouper family gets to a norma size of about 12" and they will eat what evr they can fit into their mouths.
