Howto: Use a Linksys Router as Wireless Reef Controller - WRRC

or you could go to a SBC:

http://www.embeddedarm.com/epc/ts7250-spec-h.html

Low power, small form factor, lots of capabilities.

I'm setting this up to provide my system control/monitoring with
network access. No hard driver, but has a USB for thumb drives
if you want it.

If you're not into using Linux, the company sells systems which run
MSDOS or even Windows CE.

As not an active member I had not set up my preferences , such I was not getting any email notifications etc etc. I have now done so..and do see a couple of PM's

If I had any more room in my house you guy's might be able to talk me into setting up a reef. Most of my automation thus far is driven by having to do very frequent water changes together with ph control via CO2 injection. Thus I needed to stop carrying buckets through the house.

you can see my early controller using a PIC and LCD and the solenoids/filter at

The XBOX will be a PITA to work with. If you want small and POWERFULL then lookinto the mini-itx and nano-itx form factor motherboards.

Upon further review, it appears that firmware updates to the unit have fixed loopholes to hack it.

Needless to say, I ordered one though. :)

I'm pretty sure that's why FON moved off the WRT54G platform (too easily hacked). I'd guess it's only a matter of time for this one too.

If you want a cheap PC based platform why not a second hand HP e-pc....700mhz, 256 ram, 8GB HD, VGA, USB even comes in a case ! and small enough to fit under the aquarium - they sell for something like US75.00 on ebay.

FON is an access point that shares YOUR internet with OTHER POEPLE (It is a "secure hotspot"). In other words it is supposed to allocate some of YOUR bandwidth to the public and do so while keeping you secure. You can not "hack" it (the new model) though I am sure some people have. NY state and the poloticians have their hands in it as well. Eliot Spitzer is knee deep in it which is very scary. The initial idea was to create a worldwide hotspot network.

As usual the poloticians have become involved and the idea has turned into a nifty way to leverage votes from the poor by giving them internet acces paid for by the rich. The state is trying to fund it like a social program. Silly...

No such thing as a free lunch :)

I ordered a fon device as well. Can't beat free and I like the idea behind it. I may just set it up at my gfs apartment.

Flow meter.....I use a turbine flow meter from radio spares .3 - 6 litres per minute. (I think) cost ~US50.00 ...they have various sizes. It provides pulses out proportional to flow rate. Mine gives out 4000 pulses per litre thus I use the 1wire pulse counter with internal battery. It just counts and stores the pulses. I just read the pulses and divide by 4000 to read litres. I also capture the number of pulses on sunday nights and also at midnight every day thus I can calculate flow for the week and for the day. The counter never resets unless it overflows the 32 bit internal counter. Thats why you subtract current value of the counter from the stored value at midnight the night before. I just pop the Sunday and midnight readings into a simple script file, called weekly and daily

Can you provide a part number or link where this flow meter can be found? My controller is already 1-wire based, so this would be a nice addition.

We get the idea, Bean, but what are you saying? I can not hack it, but other people have? You don't know my, or other people's abilities.

Like I said, when it gets big, it'll be hackable again :)

Pista01..Steve this is the flow meter I use 0.25 - 6.5 litres/min (US$50.00)
http://www.rs-components.com.au/1/indexb923.html

I would of thought any pulsed output flow sensor would work as long as it suitable for 5VDC. At least you can get the cct from the above link and compare this with what meters you have available. I use the 1wire 5VDC to power the photodetector cct and also the 5V with resistor for the LED.

As the counter does not reset I have not calculated how many litres go through until the counter resets to 0. I think the counter is 32 bit so lots of counts. For me I log daily flow and weekly flow so don't really care if one of these days it get stuffed up when the counter does roll over back to 0. It will only effect one of my daily flow readings and I think it will be years away having a 32 bit counter.
