Huge Colt coral needs mounting...

I just bought a huge colt coral from my LFS but its not attached to anything. They ended up selling it to me for next to nothing because of this, even though its about a foot tall! Anyways, how should I attach such a big coral? They recommended making a small cut across the bottom, not too deep though, so it will attach quicker to a rock. Would you just use a elastic band? Seems like this may be impossible to attch with a rubber band though...any ideas?

You could also put the stem between two rocks and gently push them closed, but there is a chance it may attach to both rocks.

I was thinking of doing that but its really big at the base...maybe about 4 or 5 inches thick and I dont think the rocks could "close" around it. Although I would rather do it this way...

I would sew it w/ needle and thread to large rock.
Don't get it too tight, but put several loops through base and around rock.
In 2-3 weeks it will be attached and you can remove thread.
Watch out for bacterial infection (white mushy decay)--you may have to dip base in iodine bath.

I have fragged and mounted many and they are one of the hardest to get to attach IMO. The thread is a good idea or a rubberand as well but it must be loose or either method will cut right through. The best way I found is to use a rock with a hole in it and set it in there, wedge it lightly with a small piece of rock then place it in a flow area. These corals are very slimmy and usual take a few weeks to attatch.

I bought one coral with 3 branches and one base. When I got home from the LFS I had 3 branches with 2 bases. I super glued the new pieces to a rock and everything is fine.
