Huge yellow sponge.

I was in the middle of a re-aquascape and I found this monster

Not sure what to do with it, it is in my sump for now. I am considering throwing it away.

I read they emit all sorts of nasty toxins. Plus I didn't have any room for it in the new aquascaping, and took it out of the water to move it into the sump, so it's probably going to die anyway.

I have a couple like that, they haven't harmed anything. They seem to be much more air tolerant that is commonly believed, I had a rock with one on it out of the water for ~30 mins one day and it's still alive. I squeezed any big air bubbles out of it when it went back into the water, and it's been fine since.

i have the same stuff in my tank but its white. is there actually a name for this kind? and i hope they dont emit toxins! im goiing to start a reef tank soon and i think thaT WOULD SUCK

I have both the white and yellow types in my tank and they are doing fine. They filter the water for organics and grow pretty well. I wouldn't worry about them being unsafe.

I think you will be fine. Many sponges do contain toxins but I haven't heard much about them being released into the water but more to keep them from being eaten. I have had sponges that look identical to that one and never had a problem.
