Hurricane Matthew

Hey everybody, looking to get some feedback from long time reefers who have dealt with hurricanes/tropical storms in the past. If this storm comes (hopefully not) I want to be as prepared as possible with my tank.

I have had my tank running for about 3/4 years now with no major storms so I have no experience lol which is why I am reaching out to you!!!! :lolspin:

I was planning on either forking out the money for a small Honda generator or possibly getting some deep cycle trolling motor batteries for boats, and running an inverter to allow me normal outlook hookups. I know most people say they have the small battery backups but I would like the security of knowing I can supply power to my tank for a extended period of time if needed.

I would also be interested in knowing if just a powerhead(gyre 150 in my case) would be sufficient for hours or days since I have never had that problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and let's all hope the storm passes us!

There are lots of things you can do, Ill list below

Do a nice water change prior to the storm nothing different than your usual
Prepare some top-off water and put aside
Get 2-3 battery operated air pumps, (walmart or online)
Get batteries, this air pumps use about a set of batteries every couple of days
Freeze some water on Soda plastic waters, You could float these on your tank in case the water gets too hot.
Do not feed heavy prior to the storm.
A generator does helps but unless it is a huge generator you are probably going to use it to keep your fridge and a window A/c running.

If I think of anything else i will post, Hope that helps

Awesome, I never thought about freezing water to keep tank temps in check, great idea. Thanks for the advice!!!!

Looks like it's not gonna get any better either

Nope, and now multiple projections have it looping around for another hit next week. I know a lot of people who are taking this storm lightly and not worried whatsoever
I would rather be over prepared for something and not loose anything vs underprepared and loose everything.

Fyi for anybody searching for gas/diesel go to turnpike rest stops
