Hurricane season!!

I just went for a generator. I got a refurbished 5kw Coleman from Home Depot for about the price of a good skimmer ($300). You can get deals if you look at the right time.

yea good grab!!... does the refurbed one come with any warranty?

where are you going to keep it while its running? beware of the deadly carbon monoxide

I bought about 100 hamsters and have them in cages around my room. ( I sure hope there isn't a major power outage cause I'm not going to be able to buy a generator this summer.)

Std, (lol), your in alabama man, your not at risk like the coastal people. I lived in destin a few hrs away and got destroyed by ivan........my fishies died as i didn't have a generator and didn't have electricity for 8 days, along with some of my roof being blown off. So now i'm in Indy............Dohhhh, i miss it! Weather and alllLLLLLLLLLLLL!

are there any alternatives to generators? I'm looking at some online 3100 watts- $259... not bad but I can't really spend that amount.

I am shopping generators right now. I think I am going with something on the small side, as I don't think I could afford to run a big one for extended periods of time since gas prices are so high. I think gas prices could double again if we had another Katrina style hurricane hit coastal Louisiana.

Dude, if gas prices double again, there will be total anarchy. I wouldn't worry about that. Gas won't go over $4 a gallon

Huntsville, tx
I actually drove through ivan. It sucked.

I went 5 days without power here in Birmingham after Ivan. We got plenty of risk, maybe not the damage the coast suffers but enough to destroy a tank.

when rita came through we didn't have power for two days, then we had rolling blackout for another 2 weeks for about 4 hours, I didn't have my tank then thank god. And I live about 120 miles from the coast.

I got a 8000 watt generator, and let me tell you that it is not enough... After Katrina hit Jones County, MS (not really coastal), but close enough, there was not enough generator in town to run what needed running... I didnt have power for 20 days, so I was only able to sustain my tank, and in my oppinion sustaining is not a word to be used in this hobby... If you live on the coast or close to it, you may want to get 2-3x the size or maybe 2-3 of those size Gens... My $.02

Later

Hey da1jewfish....
Great start to hurricane season huh? I'm under water here in the north end of Palm Beach County! Little T.S. Barry has already been a PITA

why was 8000 watts not enough? That should be enough to run the tank and maybe a small tv and small fridge.
what type of watts is ur tank running?

already? how bad are you under? Its not that bad here in palm springs.
Maybe we'd be better off getting a boat than a car

Branford here, About 50 miles NW of Gainesville. We welcomed the rain (been extremely dry) but got a little over 1" so far and a 5 second power out.

Yeah, finally some rain down here but not a good sign that it's from the 2nd named storm and the season only started yesterday!!!

Got the 16kw whole house generator being hooked up this week. Hope we don't have to put it to use!!!!

Nice zeorocka, thats my next project....After direct hits from Frances, Jeanne and Wilma, I can't afford to stay in this hobby without that kind of generator!

The only alternative is UPS (computer system battery backups), but these are limited in what they can run.

I'd highly suggest a generator. Put it on a credit card if you have to.

$300-$500 generator is a lot better than losing all your coral & fish.
