Branford here, About 50 miles NW of Gainesville. We welcomed the rain (been extremely dry) but got a little over 1" so far and a 5 second power out.
Just an inch? down here north of houston towards college station, we have had at least 4 storms since the year started that dumped upwards of 10 inches of rain in one or two days. Last week we had a storm that dumped 15 inches of rain in a couple of spots according to noaa's website. Their rain gauge radar was white. All the way pegged.

I am over here in tampa, fl and last year we were with out power for 8 days... My dad went out and bought a 6250 watt generator we wired the generator in the fuse box and turned off the main power... As long as the genereator was running we had lights microwave tanks, and aything else except A/C and the coffee pot... 8000 watts should be able to run a ton of stuff as long as you keep the amps down...

Dream

I went to home depot earlier and prior to going I calculated the wattage we would need to have the fridge/freezer hooked up, my salt and fresh tanks, a few lights, a few fans, and maybe a small t.v. were only looking at at most 2000 watts and maybe 2400 peak watts. so I think were going to go with a 3100 or so watt generator. Home depot said we would probably use 10 gallons or so of gas a day for a 24 hr period! Who knows h0ow long we'll be out of power, but ouch.

8000 watts sounds more than enough if ur not running the a/c.

come on guys, do you know how hot it gets during the summer? Get a generator with enough power to run your AC. After Rita, we had a week of 100+ degree days, with no AC it sucked.

If you are so worried about the heat, go down to your locally home depot and for 99 dollars pickup and old school window ac unit... What we have here is a standalone a/c unit used in apartments... It has wheels and everything... Plug that into your generator and use it to cool down one room... Leave it on all day long, so it keeps that one room extremely cold... Then at night sleep in that one room...

It is not the way we all want to live, but believe me, when you have one room to come home to and relax in that is completely cold, it will put a smile on your face... As for the generator my 6250 runs everything in my house except 240 appliances...

As for da1jewfish, 10 gallons of gas a day is a far stretch, we used our 6250 two years ago for 24 hours on almost 5 gallons of gas... Now i know it depends on your load but those generators run long and hard...

Dream

Can someone expand on battery units for backup? I can't use a generator where I have my tank. Any pics and system details would be highly appreciated. I'm in Miami, so chances are somthing's gonna happen. I lose power every year with these storms...

yeah dream, it seems like anywhere from 3000 watts to the 6250 would be fair game

from what I know battery units won't give u more than 90 minutes
and if u have VHO which u probably do, battery backups would be 100% pointless. I looked into as an alternative to generators... doesn't seem feasable in the least bit. If anyine thinks different, speak ur mind

battery backups are used to run a few powerhead for a little while, just to keep water circulating. It is not intended to run your whole system. And definately not for long term use, just a few hours. not days.
