Hybrid hammer/frogspawn

I just bought a hammer/frogspawn from a LFS in Orlando. I can't seem to find any info about it. I know Julius sprung talks about it in the corals book pg 66 but that's it. It has the hooks like a hammer but it also has dots on and around the tentacles. Any help or info would be nice thx

This is weird, but I did a quick search on Google and below is what came up. I like it, but not at that price.

$100 for that coral is a steal! I wish I had it in my tank budget but don't currently. Going to pick up several corals today from my buddy that raises frags. Getting a sweet torch, two different hammers, 2 different frogspawn and another Duncan colony.

$100 doesn't seem bad at all! I'd buy it if i didn't have a swap this upcoming weekend with over $300 worth of coral reserved xD my coral budget is pretty low right now..

yea that is it. Same color and everything. so what is it?

Well... It seems to be a freak hybrid cross between a hammer and a Frogspawn or maybe Octospawn. If you got it, I strongly suggest that you take really good care of it and it will make you some good money in frags in the future.

If I had a choral this rare, I would dedicate a section of the tank, if not a whole tank solely for it and just let it grow. You will be able to sell a few heads of this in a few months and get double your money back.

Good luck. Share some pictures of yours.

Actually Mark I've seen Hammers look like that. Heck I've got one that resembles more a torch because the tips aren't hammer shape but with round tips but it is in fact a hammer.

I'm old school, if the tip looks like a hammer, i call it a hammer, else it's a frogspawn.

About 5% are round on the tips, about the same or a few more hammer shaped, but 85% of them are 'flat' or 'pinched' darn thing is a survivor, been thru 2 crashes and a few algae takeovers

No offense, but this is just a regular hammer under too much lights. I have 4 types of hammers and I have been experimenting with light. The closer they are to the top, the rounder the tentacles get. If you bring this hammer down and to a corner of this tank, all those tentacles will get to their normal "hammer" shape in a few months.

I hope you didn't pay extra for this one thinking it was a hybrid.

No offense <clip this out ;)>

None taken at all, when I 1st got it it was 3 small heads for $8, darn thing has been thru a lot during my absences. Its now around 8 pieces each with 7-25 heads.

That is a great price even for a normal hammer. Great buy. They are pretty hardy, but watch ALK and temperature. These two have a very quick and bad effect on them.

I've got a small hammer that has been on the bottom of my tank for about 2 months and it has round tips.

Location is not the only constant you need to change. How intense are your lights? Even at the bottom, if you have 1,000 watts of power, will still be to much light. Round tentacles on hammer, in my experience, mean more light than required or the wrong kind of light.

I'm running the Chinese 165w Full spectrum LED's. I have blues at 100% and others at 40%-50%. I just recently put these on my tank like a week ago. Previously I had a 24" HO T5 4 bulb with two actinics, one purple plus and one blue plus. It was great for my 20g long but wasn't that great on my new 40b. I does look healthier with the LEDs so will see what it does over time.
