Hybrid tang

Hi a few days ago a hybrid tang which had a bluish face and a tan body was on sale for $999. It was greatly talked about here on REEFCENTAL, so I was curious if anyone remembers what the cross was between what two types of tangs, to produce that hybrid or if was unknown. Just curious, thanks for your time..

vijaym85,

The Large Zebrasoma Species Hybrid Tang that was offered on our Diver’s Den area is a cross between a Black Tang (Zebrasoma rostratum) and a Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens).

Happy Holidays!

rowland75,

Thank you for your post. This Tang hybridizes in the wild, and the specimen offered was wild-caught.

Just a quick note to the last reply. Since the tang was indeed wild caught, we are presuming it is a cross between a yellow and a black tang. All physical characteristics point to this. However, we cannot be certain of the lineage since it was produced in the wild and not in captivity. Therefore, we can only give you our "best guess." If any of you have further questions on this matter, please feel free to email us and we will forward them to our director, Kevin Kohen who will be back in the office next week.
