I don't think you would be able to remove the magnet from the hydor prop, but I could be wrong. The issue you would have is if its even fused and you would have to re glue the new prop to the magnet. If you get any of that glue out of balance the prop would wiggle I assume. My mod was a simple swap and I decided to try and with great success.

I have tried several mods on my koralia 4 all caused intermittent chatter.. i would very much like to know where the eco tech prop you used was purchase ( a link would be great)???
so you are saying you just swapped out the propeller and it worked ???? no impellar/magnets swapped?

I dont know if I missed this in the thread, but has anyone tried the maxijet mod on the controllable koralia 4's? Any different results or is it the same as the AC version of the K4?
 
I have mod'ed my Korilia 4's and placed the first one in a 5 gallon bucket, the same way I tested my Aquaclear 70 mods. I aimed it up and it lifted the water about 3 inches very close to my AC tests. If you were to ask me which one puts out more flow, I could not give an honest answer. I do know the AC 70's were putting out a little more than 3000 gph, I bag tested them.
Because I have never mod'ed a MaxiJet, I did not have a modified impeller. I went to the LFS and picked up a couple of impellors for a MJ 1200. I broke off the top and used a Dremmel to take 1/2 of the plastic out of the center of the magnet. I picked up a carbon tube from Tower Hobbies and stuck it in side of the magnet. At work we use stainless rod to TIG weld, and just happened to have some used pieces that fit the bill. This rod was used to center the tube and impeller during the glue process. I also used Dumas 3004 props, the ID was too big for the tube, so I took a piece of ridged air tubing and drilled out the center until it would fit over the carbon tube. Then I placed the prop over the plastic tube. All of that was a press fit.

When I placed it in the water the power head ran backward. I placed my hand over the out put of the pump until the prop turned the correct way. It had run for about an hour before I took the pics below. These guys are going on my Swirl Stein's, so this does not matter. I will use the little fish guards that come with the K-4's to keep from making sushi when the power goes out. Then I will restart them the correct way.

I recently modded my K4's with the "Sure Flow" Maxi Jet 1200 kit available from Dr. F and S. I used the larger of the two impellers. I pulled the prop off the shaft and flipped it over. This makes it the same direction prop as the stock ones. I tossed it in there and (other then having to unplug them a few times to get them to turn the right direction) they work great. However one of them chatters occasionaly while running, like stated above. After some investigation I noticed that the shaft hole in the impeller is crooked, making the impeller very off balanced. Im going to be writing them tomorrow to see if they will send me some new props.

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHY THE MOD WORKS FOR HOURS THEN STARTS TO CHATTER? it will run fine for a long time then chatter for a few seconds then run fine again then chatter 10 minutes later then 1 minute later than 1 hr later?
all cases ive read refer to chatter at start up but not off and on WHILE RUNNING..
please help?

I also would like to see a mod for a nano, with it's compact design it would be nice to see how much flow you could get out of it.
 
Not sure if you could, the Nano's have a hard enough time spinning themselves.... none the less a different propeller. Don't forget, the propeller is glued on the magnet also. (found that out the hard way)
 
dont know if anyone will see this, but quite a few people asked about a modded K3. I just got my Maxijet 1600 mod kity and used the black prop and the MJ magnet and successfully modded my K3. I had to cut approx. 1/2 inch out of the middle of the prop shaft and glued it back together and it pushes a lot more water. Exact GPH I have no clue, but put back into the same position it was before the mod in my Display tank, it blew the top layer of sand around. Now I didnt create a snow storm, which made me happy, but it definitely increased the flow.

And I didnt have any problems with the prop starting in reverse.
 
I JUST did did this mod but one of my K4 is spinning backwards. The other one is fine though.

I am using the algea free kit from md.com

I can only speak for the K4's. The Dumas 3004 works best for me.

If it turns backward put your hand over the face of the pump and hold it there until the pump changes direction.

I am not sure I understand your question; you want to cut down what?
 
The outer case to make it smaller. It sticks out too much. Someone in the beginning of the posts tried, but I believe there was some sort of problem with it? Just wondering if anyone was able to reduce it's size. It just protrudes into the tank too much.

Thats fine, even the non moded Koralia do that. just stick you figer and it will reverse the flow. do it a couple of times if it doesnt reverse back. dnt worry it doesnt hurt.:D
