Hydra 26,52,maxspect,Radion pro oh my!!

Been meaning to do this but just no time... A few months ago I wanted to upgrade my led lights. I have been using the Maxspect Razor over my reef with pretty good results. I've just felt that I could do better and began to look at the Hydra 26, 52 and the Radion pro 15 and 30 models. Spend hours and hours researching and basically coming up empty. So if your looking at these 5 led lights here is what I have found.

Maxspect: Nice and compact, easy to mount to the tank, and easy to program the 6 channels with the separate blue and white. Decent coral growth and decent color but just no real wow factor. Had to raise the fixture about 10 inches to get decent spread through out the tank. I got the 16k and the blue is dominant.

Hydra 26: Very bright, Surprisingly good coverage at only about 8 inches off the tank. Colors are very good and the corals just pop. Very good growth, the fans only run when necessary (which isn't often), and reasonably priced. Controller can control 30 lights and syncs them well.

Bad: You have to buy a additional controller, the controller feels very cheap. The software is just silly in its logic and has a learning curve to program. Example is you have to go backwards in programing the channels other wise it gives an error and won't let you continue. So you have to start at the last channel and go to the first. Also the controller must be plugged in at all times if you want it to control the lights.

Hydra 52: Lots of light great for a deeper tank or a tank with a lot of corals that may be shading some of your other corals. Can be mounted a bit lower on the tank due to the extra pucks. Fans seem to run a bit more often but not a bad thing.

Bad: Price is nearly double the 26. Also the same controller issues as above.

Radion 15pro: Very nice light, good colors and maybe just a fraction more power than the Hydra. The controller was nice and seemed simple to use (although I only messed with it for about 30 minutes). The mounting options are easier with the Radion (although more expensive). The 30 pro was just crazy expensive and I really didn't spend much time with it as it was just no costly. What I saw was very impressive however.

Bad: Expensive, and only one puck. With using the back of the tank mount I noticed a distinct shadowing effect on a 2X2 area. Have to buy a controller and the mounting options are expensive.

Conclusion: I went with the 2 of the Hydra 26's and after a couple months still don't have the colors over 40% at any time. The corals are doing very well and the growth has been much better than when I was using the maxspect. Also if down the road I need more light I can add another 26 very easily but I can't imagine needing one. The coverage is great with lots of power in reserve. I don't have par readings or other technical information but for me the Hydra 26s are the best for what I am doing. I'm sure I've left out quite a bit of info in order to keep this short so if you have any questions and are looking for answers I will do my best. When I did my research I called and spoke with all three companies as well as some sales locations to see first hand how the units worked.

I have put a quantum meter on my Hydra52s and they do give out very good PAR, I'm sure the 26s will be the same. However the optical angle on these is poor, if I moved the meter 50mm away from the centre line the PAR dropped significantly, to the point where at the mid tank level it was around 410 PAR directly below the lights and as low as 40 PAR at the glass (375mm away from the centre point). The outcome of this being that corals will grow up very well but I think the spread of SPS corals might not be as good because the light simply isn't there. For this reason I would have had to add another fixture and flip them 90 degrees into parallel to get the desired light spread. In the end I decided to order an LED/T5 Hybrid to ensure I get the amount of light required across the whole tank.

Good write up kenpau01, I've been running a old 6 tube HO T5 39 wt 36" over my tank that is 36l x 24h x 24d but I've been itching to upgrade to better lighting but haven't been convinced led only is an upgrade. What LED/T5 combo did you end up ordering if you don't mind telling?

Well.....I decided to be reckless and spend some money! So I went for the 5ft Giesemann Aurora Hybrid, $3500 but it's got pretty much everything I'm looking for hopefully, theres not many reviews on it as it's pretty new.

Again I can't speak to par etc etc. Im just going off my observations on both my tank and several others I went to see with these lights. I would like to offer this information for people who are/were like me and having a hard time deciding mostly between the Hydra 26/52 and the Radion pro models.

Here are some of the youtube links I used:

Hydra 26 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcjWqo9S4uY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP5MRTYeZZM

Hydra 52 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBHKD1YNRjk

Radion Pro 3gen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5HJVxfWQ2c
Radion Pro xr15 pro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XroZGtxnOE4

Also lots of posts on these led here at RC. I also talked with people who went back to MH after trying out LED's. I observed one tank with 3 400 watt MH on a 180 and then used 3 Hydra 52 fixtures. Ill take the much cooler and less energy consumption option. Im not the person to say what light is best. I just wanted to take what I learned and make a post. After sending so much time with these fixtures I thought that I might be able to answer some questions. I also explored a variety of ways to mount all these lights including moding a Radion mount to fit a Hydra.

After looking at options I eventually went with hydra 26s too, 5 of them on my 120. The reds and oranges are more intense then I could capture in the photos below. I have never invested time learning how to edit photos (or even take pics) to try and get capture that though, so just white balance and highlights turned down.

FYI PAR map and current FTS:

Very nice. How did you mount the 26's to the AI hanging rails? I used the EXT single rail but not the kit. I like how you positioned the lights. Thanks for posting the par numbers as that may help answer some questions for some.

I just used a bit longer bolts than what are supplied so I could mount them parallel to the bar and not perpendicular. The head fits in the rail slot and you can slide them around the rails just like AI has it set up.

Love my Hydra 52. It's 14" awl over my 40g 32/18/16.

Upgrade to either the Director or if you have Apex, the AWM module and you'll love it even more.

Programming is as simple as click/drag/drop and you can use the presets for each color temp n control intensity separately.

Kenpau, good for you but $3500 not in my budget, I hope they do good.
Hart24601, those and your tank look fantastic, par levels look great. That would be hard to improve on, and total cost?

I got 1 hydra 26 for winning a contest, but they are normally $300 x 5 = 1,500 + 100 for director and 100 for mounting rails and hanging kit = $1700. Like I said I did get one for free, and I don't think you would need this many until you get big SPS colonies that self shade. IT's nice with these because if you decide you need another unit just slide it in place with the rails and the director automatically finds and controls it. Also keep in mind those PAR values are only 80% all and 80%/32%. I did find one nice feature of the director is also you can run the fixtures at different values. I now run the fixture in the middle at 95% and the left front at 60% for lower light corals.

I forgot to say the rails have the side pieces for the 52's so the two rails are farther apart. Marine Depot included both the shorter sides for the 26 and longer for the 52s.

Totally understand that mate, they're not cheap! I have 2 jobs to fund this hobby!! That price is in Australian dollars, they'll probably be cheaper in the US, it's also for the 5ft version, you'd only need the 3ft. Think CoralVue are the suppliers over there.
If still too expensive then some hydra52s supplemented by a simple T5 ballast would do almost exactly the same, just without the Bluetooth capability.

You can also create a sunrise/sunset that will power the different lights at different levels to create the effect. Example is the sunrise on the left side and sets on the right side.

So either one of you what do you think will be needed on my tank for mixed sps, lps and softies. Tank is 36" wide x 24" tall x 24" deep, love to catch a July 4th sale :)

Thats exactly what I would have recommended. Did you get a controller or the director to go with it? Also run that light at low settings for awhile mine still dont go over 40% at peak.

It is the "New" AI controller that comes with the "kit" from saltysupply, I'm hoping everything I need is included. I just have a Neptune Jr which I have used with the t5 fixture and the LT 1 and LT 2 on/off feature.
