Hydrated lime

Ok I've ran out of my pickling lime and can't find it any place.. My question is, is hydrated lime ok to use ?

Tops, Wegmans, Walmart, country Max, are all out till fall... my local farm store has what's called hydrated lime .. not sure of its contents, was checking to see if anyone here has used it or not..

I did a search on it and in my opinion it isn't safe for our reef tanks. If you search the forums there are a few threads that also advise against using it. If you would like I can stop at Agway here and pick up a couple containers of it and send it to you. I believe their $6 for big container.

Did some research, and come to find out pickling lime is the common name for hydrated lime which is a food grade calcium hydroxide ... same stuff different name... I can get 50 pounds for 18 bucks ..

If you want, I have 4 containers of mr. wages that I never used. You are welcome to come get them if you want.

I'd make sure that what you are using is food grade. You want the stuff to be as pure as possible.

Update, went and picked up a 50 pound bag of hydrated lime.. checked the ingredient label against the Mrs.wages and they are indeed the same..

I guess if it's food grade it should be fine. Keep us posted on how it works out for you. $18 for 50 lbs is one heck of a deal! 50 lbs would last me about 5 yrs or more... but heck.

I wonder if that stuff goes bad?

I'll be sure to post results after use.. I don't believe there is a shelf life, as long as its kept from getting damp it should be fine for a long time.. this bag will last me years I'm sure.. lol
