Hydroids:

Can anybody tell me how to get rid of hydroids???
Got them on some live rock I purchased from Florida...
Had a few at first, now their in colonies!!!
They were killing my Dwarf Seahorses, I transferred them to
another tank till I can find a solution to getting rid of those
Dam things!!! Is there a fish that will eat them, that will not harm
my seahorses, or a water treatment???
Help Please???

make a paste out of kalk and spread it over the hydroids this will help kill them. or if you can take the rock out and boil it.

You can also seal the tubes with super glue gel if you reach them all .
This has worked for me in the past 100% .

Panacur is a animal wormer, is there one made for aquarium use???

It tells you in the first post on that thread that it's a dog dewormer but the only form you can't use is the paste.
Also note the disclaimer as some inverts are sensitive to this.
There is enough information in that thread for you to use the panacur.

Solved the problem with Hydroids, without all these chemical!!!!
Im not a chemical using person, don't like chemicals in my tank....
Believe it or not I brought a small Chocolate Chip Starfish, and
he got rid of everyone of those things....LOL

Keep an eye on your dwarf tank for more hydroids just to be safe. As Ray posted, if you get more hydroids in the dwarf tank, I would suggest the panacur. Make sure that you are using decapsulated brine to feed your dwarfs. It will help to keep down the chance of hydroids coming back.

Ralph, because there is more information one should know beyond the original post, I wouldn't be comfortable posting just the instructions and then having you loose something you didn't know would be affected.
While RC doesn't like anyone to be directed to another forum, if you have dwarfs, you SHOULD, IMO, be taking advantage of the dwarf specific information available on the seahorse specific forum.
Once you have completed the registration process, you will be able to view that thread in the link as well as the information in the dwarf seahorse section.

Hydroids have a free swimming stage, so hitting those that are on substrate will probably not solve the problem. Also it is difficult to find them all.

Fenbendazole ( panacure ) is a dewormer used for sheep, cattle, dogs, cats, chickens etc etc. It is very toxic for worms. It is also very toxic for several groups of marine life.

It is only suitable in a dwarf tank, not in a marine aquarium. It has a two year decay and stays in substrate and rock for this period, slowly decaying and killing stuff.

Great for dwarves, bad for almost everything else.


An alternative is Hydrogen Peroxide, which decayes into water and oxygen in seconds, leaving no lasting effects. It is very bad for hydroids as it desolves them completely.

1/8 teaspoon of the horse dewormer granules (22.2% fenbendazole) per 10 gallons of water. 25% water change 24 hours later.

Also, I've used the paste plenty of times just fine. What you have to do is make sure its good and emulsified. The paste was the only thing I could get locally for a long time. For the paste, I generally use a small portion, about 1/8" out of a standard horse wormer tube, put it in a plastic bag with a small amount of freshwater (about two tbs), then shake the hell out of it until the water is milky. Then add that to the tank if its a 5 gallon, or half that for a 2.5 gallon.
