hydroids

Looks like Aiptasia to me. Take care of it quick or it's going to spread fast. Since you said you're cycling still, it should be a bit easier to get rid of them asap. Get some peppermint shrimp and they should be able to clean those up.

How long has your tank been running/cycling?

My mistake, I got the threads screwed up and thought I was replying to another one. Me= :thumbdown

my tank has been cycling for 3 weeks and only looked as i have some more live rock coming tomorrow lol

dont really want any shrimp in my tank tho ? getting rid of them after they have taken care of it would be hard as my LFS would never have a retrun

Wait, so what exactly does he have? It looks like a form of aiptasia according to the link you provided.

If you have Hydroids, Peppermint Shrimp will not help with that. While, it was not a pic from your tank, if your tank really does look like the picture that you posted, then you do have Hydroids.

I had a problem with Hydroids a month or so ago and I used the torch method. That has worked out very, very well for me.

Get a mini blow torch from a hardware store, take the affected rock out, and burn off the hydroids with the torch. I rinsed them in Ro/Di water afterwards to be extra safe.

Either remove the rock, break the rock far back from the hydroids or torch them as mentioned. I have also had luck supergluing rock rubble (lots/gobs of glue) over them. Keep an eye on that area though as they can pop back up around the glued area. Now is the time to remove them.

I will admit I have never heard of the blowtorch method before but I think I will try it tonight on my one lone live rock in my cycling tank.

I better do it before the wife comes home though, she will think me nuts if she sees me doing that.

Better yet, go all out. Get yourself a welder's mask and apron and stand in the front yard with the torch on full blast. Remember, she married you for better or for worse :).

AHHH!!! I just looked studied the rock more tonight. Hydroid, Aipstatia and bubble algae on it. I might as well take the Oxy-Acetylene torch home from work and burn the rock.

If it is just on 1 rock and you are still cycling, I would take it out and kill all life on it. Dry it out in the sun or something...fresh water bath over night?? One Aiptasia that you can see can mean 4 that you can't. Not sure what Hydroids do or how fast they spread but looks like a relative. Don't worry bout the bubble algae, easy to take care of later.

Emrald crab for bubble algae.
Peppermint shrimp (From Florida) for aiptasia.
Do not worry about hydroids. They will dissapear on their own.

It is sitting in a bag in the garage as we speak. Sucks too because it was the only piece of live rock in my 20 gallon. It had other stuff on it too, that wiry green algae that is hard to get rid of on it also. It is absolutely the worst piece of live rock I could have bought. It looked good in the store too. I should have looked harder.

Sorry OP, don't mean to thread jack.
