hydroids...

Super Abound
i just got done with two 20 hour work days to find my tank filled with the little floating bastards. i would see a few here and there in my old tank but ive got hundreds coating the walls of my box of water :(

im on day 17 of the tank so its kinda still cycling. ive got a fair amount of green hair algae. very small amount of diatoms and green algae in the sand still. i put in one nass and 2 cerith (i thought i read they stir the sand but so far they hang on the glass lol) thats it besides stomatella, brittle stars and small featherdusters that came with the live rock. i have fed some live phyto to the tank to help the pods and other small wildlife in there.

params:
NH4 - 0
NO2 - 0
NO3 - 1

CA - 450
MG - 1380
DKH - 7

im in the process of raising alk. i plan on letting ca and mg fall a bit into more natural ranges.

anyway, nothings really in the tank yet. is this something i can wait out or should i take action? what sort of action can i take?

thank you in advance!!

I'd take the rock out, use tweezers and pull them off at the base, then wash the stuff off with tank water. It's a tedious process but there are very few alternatives. The the only predator is aeolid nudibranch which isn't reef safe.

google the life cycle of hydroids or jellyfish. the ephyra stage is more than likely what you are seeing on your glass.

yea i had read that, its an early stage of them i think. what do you think i should do? this morning i ratcheted up the mp40 a few notches and aggressively scrapped the glass with my magfloat and scrapper, hoping to either destroy or send them to my filter sock. im gonna to a water change tonight and switch out my sock. there seems to be less of them now. i think im going to do it again shortly.

i get them when i set up a new tank with fresh live rock( i.e. rock fresh from the ocean) theyll go away in time (at least for me they have)

thanks for the replies (and reassurance!). i guess this is their sexual phase, they release gametes that eventually form sessil colonies. been a long time since HS bio so please correct me if i am wrong. im still being proactive and attempting to destroy or remove. thank you again! ill try and keep this thread updated
