That's quarantine. What do you do if there's a complete ich outbreak big time on the fish?

Same thing. Or raise salinity to 1.016-1.017 and dose copper. I never had to do it. I may see a fish's tail, fins or head covered with some ich speckles but nothing ever major.

Has your tang ever been to your main tank where there is live sand and rock? Or has it been in QT since day 1? I find it a little odd that a fish would have a major ich outbreak in QT where the conditions for ich cycle are so much less than ideal. Not that it's impossible. I just never experienced it.

Just to clarify the post above I wait 2-3 days after each treatment. So 5-7 days of prazi followed by 2-3 days off. Then Maracyn 2 treatment followed by 2-3 days off and so on. By the time you are done treating you are 4 weeks in to QT. At this point the fish are healthy, only needing a week or two of additional observation.

So when you put them into hypo you just drip them from nsw to hypo? How long to change salinity

I had it originally in QT, no treatment, with some live rock for observation for 4 weeks. Then I attempted to introduce the fish to one of my DT using an accclimation box for 5 days. The existing tangs showed only slight interest in the fish so I released it. The existing fish basically tried to kill it and I was lucky to catch the fish the next day so he was only overnight in that DT plus the time in the box. Tha't's when I put him back in the QT and the stress obviously caused this ich outbreak. I am hoping to eventually put this fish into my other DT.

You are welcome. I just float the bag and put the fish in a specimen container. I acclimate it in the container by gradually adding hypo water. I don't drip bc my QT has had all kinds of medication in it and I don't want to even try expose my mouth to start the drip. LOL. Fish can handle going into lower salinity very well without much acclimation. But going to high salinity is another thing.

Sorry you are having to deal with this. I would re-consider your entire QT protocol and acclimation box procedure in your tank. Hope your tang makes it.

Stress doesn't cause an ich outbreak. You have ich in your DT. Either it was present before the addition of the PBT (and therefore infected the fish when it was introduced), or brought into the DT by the PBT.

Despite my best efforts I have never been able to run a totally ich free DT. I lift my hat off to those who have been able to do so. I rarely have any issues with diseasy though but a fish with a serious outbreak I will not put in the tank as that causes trouble. I guess I'm failing in this part of the hobby.

If I were you I would get a used 60-75 gallon tank (or bigger), move all your fish there and treat them with copper or hyposalinity. Most of the time the ich is gone after 4 weeks without a host fish but you should run your main tank fallow for 5-6 weeks, 8 is better.
Second, I would change your QT protocol where you know new fish going into your display is 100% ich free. There are various ways of doing it. 5 days for a tang in acclimation box is too long. I had a 1.5" inch Valentini Puffer in an acclimation box for 3 days once and even he got very uncomfortable. Can't imagine how an active fish like a tang would feel in a small box for 5 days. There are obviously many ways of preventing parasite introduction into our systems and you should pick the one that works best for you. It can be done. Best of luck with your tang. Powder blues are one of my favorite tangs.

My acclimation box is almost as big as a 10 gal tank. Full of perforated holes, acrylic. I had a good sized live rock piece in it and fed the fish with plenty and had constant availability to graze on Nori type weed. The fish did not suffer in the box nor get stressed. I have been keeping fish 25 years and most of my fish live with me for years very well. I have always had tangs and I understand their needs. I was simply asking for some advice on why hypo salinity had not worked after 16 days when I started this thread. This conversation is getting un productive at best so I am out of here. Thank you all.
