Hypo Help

Im 2 weeks into hypo. I noticed yesterday that I had spots on my powder blue, yellow tang, and heniocus. The Salinity has been pretty consistant 1.009 but it might hit 1.010 during the day while im at work its a 30gal tank. the water quality has been somewhat poor ive been doing small water changes ever 3-4 days I read earlier that filter media should be changed or cleaned every other day. I have rinsed it a few time but not every other day. I Should mention I have been using flintz water treatment which is like ammo lock it makes ammonia and nitrate safe but doesnt remove them. So given these factors is it comon to see a outbreak 2 weeks into hypo. I Also placed a Small 9 watt UV steralizer in there today im not convinced that they work but it maybe will help slow reinfestation if that occurs. So any thoughts, im hopeing as bad as it may sound its just poor maintance and not some resistant form of ich or bateria

If your SG reaches anywhere above 1.009; you've re-started the ich life cycle. Every time this happens, you need to re-start the treatment clock. There is no room for error with hypo and a perfectly calibrated refractometer is a must. As you've seen, an ATO is a big help too. If you cannot keep SG at 1.009-1.008; I'd consider a more effective treatment. Tank transfer, copper or (still, with some reservations) CP. Personally, I don't like hypo, for several reasons. In addition to the precise treatment protocol, I think some strains of ich have developed tolerance to hypo at any level a fish can tolerate. I know I don't read every post on forum; but I can't remember the last time I read anything positive about hypo from any but long-time hypo users. I know it works well for some folks but (without any documentation) I think most hypo fans are long-time users of hypo and excellent aquarists as well. They have learned all the delicate tricks of getting hypo to work.

FWIW: UV will not, and cannot, eliminate ich. Nitrate will not hurt fish. There's no reason to even test nitrate in a QT/HT. I'd also suggest you read Snorvich's stickies on ich at the top of the disease forum. Its vital info and will show you how dangerous a little time above 1.009 really is.

thanks thats what i was thinking im sure that it is hitting 1.010 during the day i think i will add a ATO. Ive had very good luck with Hypo in the past. and less luck with copper my fish seam to die during treatment.

If you have used ammonia locking chemicals combined with copper treatment, that is why the fish died. I only make that statement because you say you are using them now with hypo. They amplify the copper toxicity tenfold and poison the fish. I've had great results with cupramine if you need to go the copper route. Good luck!
