Hyposalinity Log On My Display - Around 650 Gallons System Volume

Well yesterday 11/24/2014 the tank is back at 1.025 :)

Going to start moving my inverts and Chaeto back in tonight!

Any updates? I have just started adding corals and now I have a large yellow tang that has ich.

One of my friends wants me to take the display tank down to 1.017 for 10 days or so. He said the corals wont be happy but should not lose any of them. Cause it wont be long term. Your thoughts?

All over. Took forever to raise and lower salinity.

Haven't seen any spots in months since.

1.017 isn't low enough. Needs to be 1.008 to 1.009. Keep it there for at least 6 weeks. Then raise salinity slowly. Will need to remove your coral for awhile though...

Nuxx, you've got me beat. I thought I had the largest home QT for hyposalinty treatment at 110 gallons for 11 fish. You had a 470 gallon tank! Lol.

reelredfish, hyposalinity at 1.009 will kill your coral. Anything above 1.009 won't kill the ich, so it won't work. Nuxx's tank was new, contained only fish, had dry rock jut put in, and no coral. Instead of removing the coral, you can remove the fish into a QT. A QT does not have to be fancy, even a rubbermaid tub will do.

Would have to dismantle the entire tank. Also your talking about trying to cram 3 large fish into a small QT. Each fish is 5" plus so I don't think they would survive in QT either.

Couldn't have said it better :)

Well i lowered it like he told me to feed them a garlic soaked food 4 to five times a day and also added some ginger to the water. All i can say is all seem to be well now. The yellow tang that was the worse off is looking very good and eating like a pig now.

I have begun to slowly increase the salinity back to normal. Not saying any of this was a cure but worked out for me.

Yep, there are tanks out there that happily co-exist with Ich, your tank seems to be one of them. There are also anecdotal reports of Ich eventually "dying out" in time. Next time, I wouldn't waste the effort of bringing salinity down to 1.017 in an attempt to cure Ich. Just keep your tank stable and parameters pristine, feed well so long as your fish are eating, acclimate any new fish well, and you may be fine.
