Hyposalinity - What level of ammonia to add Prime?

Hey guys,

Just curious at what level of ammonia should I add some prime?

Also after Prime is added, do I need to do a water change a few days later?

Thanks :)

Not sure about prime since I have never used it. Is it live bacteria or something else? Any ammonia reading should be corrected thru a H2O change or live bacteria. Ammonia cause fish to not eat and hide typically. You never want to see ammonia with fish or inverts

No amount of ammonia is acceptable. Prime will detoxify the ammonia, not remove it. I dose Prime after a water change. Are you running an uncycled QT? More than likely you will need to do water changes everyday depending on feedings and waste. Be sure to clean out excess food and waste everyday to keep ammonia down.

+1 - use what ever ammonia detox substance you can use if you even see .25ppm - won't negatively impact your inhabitants. use once per day if needed.

I had 0 ppm and now have 0.05 ppm at day three of hypo.

Do you think this is just initial die off of any inverts and material on the rock and sand?

Also I heard the beneficial batercia goes dormant for a few days in hypo... How long does this last?

BTW: Added a half dose of Prime and ammonia looks to be around 0.02 ppm. What levels should I be extremely concerned about? I know I'll have some show up.

After the initial die off, should the bacteria catch back up and not need Prime added any more?
