Hyposalinity

I remember reading the formula to lower your salinity to 1.009 but I can not find it. I am thinking about doing a Hypo treatment in my main tank. I will remove all rock to a trash can with powerhead and heater for 8 weeks. I have a 180 gallon display currently at 1.022.

i believe that link is a bit outdated.
current practice is recommended to lower all at once. it must, though, be raised gradually.

REALLY?????? Lower the salinity all at one time???? From 1.025 to 1.009 That seems a little extreme.....I would think it would be safer to do it over a 2 day period.

Just think of it like a freshwater dip. BTW anyone know of any plants that will survive hypo? like chaeto maybe?

A mixture of 1/3 FW and 2/3 std reef SW should get you close to 1.009.

Since your using hypo in your ST you can simply remove 1/3 of the water volume and use that in your rubbermaid trashcan that is going to hold your live rock. Just replace the water with RO and you should be pretty close to your salinity goal and you can always fine tune. There are plenty of threads which would indicate that fish can tolerate rapid reductions in salinity but you need to go slow when you increase salinity. When I use hypo I drop the salinity over 24 hrs ... faster will probably work fine but I have not personally done that.

You should consider placing your macro in the rubbermaid .. not sure if the macro is going to like the hypo.

wow hypo does seem kind of extreme I thought it had to be lowered slowly. My friends tank has a major ich problem and wanted to do that. HE has live rocks and sand and a tube worm thats about it, so hypo requires lets say 1.025 with a large water change drop it down to 1.009 and let the fishes swim around for 8 weeks than slowly raise it up .001 each day? wouldnt the fish be stressed out with such a quick drop in salinity?
