I can't STAND it!

Have Clapton in your heads now folks? Your welcome! :spin3:

Anyways, Picked up this tank and stand this weekend that I'm building up to be my display. Tank is 125 gallon 6' long tank. It came with the stand pictured below. The stand itself is well enough built, except it was made without vertical support in the center. I was going to put supports in last night and start skinning it when I noticed the gap. All of the corners are on the stand solidly, but there's a gap pretty much along the majority of the long sides of the tank, in the middle it's like 1/8".

Plan is this (and this is the part I'd like feedback on), I'm going to remove the screws holding the 3/4" ply on the top of the stand and shim between it and the 2x4 that runs lengthwise. I am of course going to add vertical supports before I shim (probably 2 on front and back).

I have read that if the corners are supported on a rimmed tank than you are pretty much good to go, but that thought is not comforting to me. Am I paranoid?

If I add supports and don't shim perfectly, is it possible that a point load problem can occur causing eventual cracking, even though it is on 3/4" ply that should "settle in" to imperfections in linearity (this is the reason for the ply, right)?

I searched the DIY stand thread, but sifting through hundreds of pages of posts didn't yield the exact answers I am looking for.

Any advice is appreciated!!!

I had a 6' 125 for about five years made by AGA. I used their stand which did not have a layer of ply, it was only supported on the edges as you are mentioning. It was nice being able to see from underneath occasionally to locate the foot of my LTA.

I can't say that only the corners need to be supported. I'm in the same boat that the entire rim should get shimmed like you're planning to do.

I would just trash that thing and start over. lol. And support all the edges all of the way around. I have had stand both ways. Solid top and around the rim. I like the around the rim better for plumbing reasons if you have corner overflows.
