well the day ive been dreading. the day my son get enough money to setup himself what he always wanted. AN OCTO TANK!!!!!!!!

hes been an octo fan since he was a little boy. his bought books and read many artciles on them and everything. his already bought a 55g tank. with a small 10g sump. his going to buy the skimmer this sunday. just to make sure is there any other equipment he needs?

what sort of inviroment does he need to make? does there need to creat caves and so on? just want to make sure hes doing everything right.

he is planning on getting a bimac.(ultimatly he wants a blue ring:rolleyes: kids hey.

any other info ould be great.

cheers

From what I understand he's going to need a very secure fitting lid. Or you might end up with a very dry octopus!

lol, yea, octo are escape artists. im building him a special escape proof top for the tank.

dont worry about it. Ive had mine running for about 2 months now and not once have i seen him try to get out... only when i feed him though. He knows the hand that feeds him and when i wave a snail inside the water he will crawl out to get it from my hand and go back in.

Forget the blue ring, although they are beautiful, you cant interact as much with them... unless you want to chance getting bit.

My bimac is great. It loves to explore my hand. it tries to drag my hand around... But when he gets upset he shoots water out the tank.

What i did was just seal the back of the tank and back half of the lid with silicone since it comes off easy if i need to. but strong enough to keep him back.

I made the mistake of adding CC instead of fine sand, but i was like let me see how he deals with that... i see no skin irritation or anything like that.

Its probably easier to keep than anything else ive had. And ive had my share(over 86 animals in the last 4 yrs.)

1.get a secure lid with NO holes
2. make sure the water is oxygen rich
3. good filterations(octos are messy eaters)
4. run carbon 24/7(incase octo inks)
5. get a young captive raised octo if you can
6. be sure to stimulate the octo
7. keep it in it's own tank.

That should get you started

HTH,
Bill

ok, thanks for all the info. ill tell my son about the carbon. ill probally get a captive raised octo from my lfs pretty easily.
when you sya stimulate the octo, how would you do that?

I just give him live food and put it into a conatiner and the octo figures how to open it up. one of those easter eggs that opens up would work great.

1.filter
2.pump
3.sand
4.live rock
5.at least two dens
6.salt
7.make sure u dont use tap water,as its poisin 2 octos
8.live food
9.lighting
10.decorations,coral ect.
11.clean crew(snails)
12.plants
13.test kit
14.10 gallon for live feed
everything listed is needed, plus much more, lol, the list goes on and on. visit tonmo.com for lots more info.
also, do u have experience w/ salt water tanks, maybe its best if u start w/ some shrimp, before u take on the full responsabilty of a octo.its also good to know that most octos can only live up to a year and half at the most.
remember, if you dont get wut is listed above, then be prepared for the worst to come.
good luck
