I don't understand using RO/DI filers

you filter plain tap water through the ro-di and then you mix the newly made up water with your choice of synthetic seasalt to the salinity you choose

The RO/DI is does not filter the water in the aquarium...it is used to filter the tap water before you put it in your aquarium. Once you add salt and put the water in your aquarium it never goes through the RO/DI again.

So RO/Di water is ready to use right away and do not have to worry about the chlorine that is present or this filter removes that as well?

By the sounds of that statement it leads me to believe you filled your whole 55 gallon tank with tap water? And do answer your question, yes it purifies the water to the parameters neccessary for your saltwater tank.
