I finally caved in....

So I have been eyeing this fish every since I starting with saltwater tanks. He taunts me with his beauty. Constantly flirting in my face at the fish store. Well I finally gave in. Couldnt hold off anymore. But problem is I have a 40 breeder SPS dom tank, with lots of high priced corals. Well he isnt going in there.

Im going to setup a tank just for him. He is still very small so should be fine in my QT.

Im going to setup a 30 gallon long just for him. Basic fowlr type setup. Lots of rock. 2 bulb T5 for corals that Im chosing. I plan on putting, GSP, xenia, anthelia, and clove polyps or anything really fast growing. Which will make for a nice wavy tank but also to where the angel cant decimate the corals in it, once he decides to go for corals. Going to run an HOB skimmer.

He will be the only fish in the tank, most likely....unless I decide to put in a flame hawkfish.

Any thoughts?

Cross-post. You answered my question.

Lol....Mr. Tusk pointed it out and as I answered you asked me what kind of fish lol.

Well Im pretty excited about this tank. I have been debating a smaller angel tank for months now...and I cant resist it anymore.

Yes...I really cant stay in the hobby any logner and continue to fight not having an angels tank.

So updated. Got the tank pretty cheap and close 50 50 lbs of rock in a bin right now. But it did have some aiptasia...Ill take my chaces. Ive faught it before with peppermint (which distroyed it in one night) and using lemon juice or kalk paste. Its very established rock and I think that will help in created a mature system a little faster.

I picked up a 30 gallon, with a stand, heater, some HOB filters and K1 powerhead for around $70.

Here are some shots of my angels a few days after being in QT. Still a little shy.

nice work, however, flame angels (ime) are 100% safe in reef tanks. i'm 2 for 2 and going to buy another one soon for my new reef.

Yeah well I just cant allow myself to take the chance. Im good lol. Maybe if I trial run him after awhile in this tank with cheap SPS.

2 for 2= 100% reef safe? I once saw Shaquille O'neal make all 6 free throws in a game, I guess he was 100% accurate from the FT line! He finished his career as one of the worst free throw shooters in NBA history. I think a little research will show Flames as "iffy" at best.

Good move with the LR, SpongerO. IMO & IME, lots of mature LR is really key with most dwarf angels, especially Flames----pretty fish! BTW, why are so many of the great bonefish guides in thee Keys from Virginia beach?

Try and find a smaller juvi and pair them, I know at least 2 members have a pair of angelfish on here but I forgot who they were.

i have done the research and read books on the subject and know what authors write about flames having uneven records in reefs. i'm sure Mr. sponger0 knows too, because why would he bother setting this tank up. i was trying to convey my personal experences with flames, hence IME. with "2 for 2= 100% reef safe" i was trying to show a small satistical sample size and maybe some humor!

Thank Mr. Tuskfish. No matter what a single person's experience is with any flame that is reef cautious that say they have been no issue, there is between 2-3 people that say they are not. Books can be books but people experience speak alot more. Before I made any decision to this I did a Google search and there was nothing to comfirm any angel is 100% reef safe. Some have been 0 for 2, 1 for 1, or never have a problem with an angel in a reef. My opinion is it is a roll of the dice with angels and Im not a gambling man.

And Mr Tuskfish, I have read that angels do better in mature systems. So some good estbablished rock is going to help that. Granted the rock does have some aiptasia on it, but I dont mind taking care of that with some lemon juice and peppermint shrimp. Worked beautifully for me before. I wash going to bleach it, but I feel it would be better if I just took care of the aiptasia without destroying the established rock.

Well tank is cycling now. Just running a hob filter to help clean up the tank and add flow until I can get a second powerhead. Yes just a very basic light lol. Just until I find a light for cheap. And looking into the skimmers. Figure it can cycle and nothing is going in it for at least 2 months so it should be fine.

Thanks. Well not as healthy as I thought. He has ich and noticed it last night. So I started dropping salinity last night and this morning. Hopefully I acted soon enough to treat him.

I had this feeling I would have ich from him. Just for some reason.

So update....got the flame into hypo and been in it for about a week. Also would up have popeye. Grabbed some maracyn 2 and took care of that. Sill looks good. No sign of eye and eye isnt swollen.

His tank is cycled and waiting lol

Yeah even in the QT I love to watch him. He is so cool. He will be shy when i am near the QT....but pokes his head out of the pvc to watch me lol

Well, since he's got his own tank now you can introduce extra coral frags you have bit by bit and see what his appetite is.

For me, it was nada.

Flame angels (from my experience) are totally reef safe- but since you have a separate tank go ahead and put corals in there and see if he nips at them- my money would be on him being just fine with them.

Nice choice though- it is a great fish :)
