I got my first Mantis Shrimp yesterday. He is a green smasher and is about 1-2" in size. I will be taking pictures of him as soon as I can find my memory for my digital camera (just moved so things are still packed away). I have waiting almost a year to get one of these guys. I had to wait mainly because I was moving and the fact that these little guys are not so easy to find in the trade. I have him in a standerd 10 gallon All-Glass tank. I have about ten pounds of Marshels live rock so there are plenty of place for him to hide and such. I have about an inch and a half of live sand. I have an aquaclear 300 and a mini aqua clear both running carbon and foam. I have a 150 watt titanium heater and a 28 watt 50/50 compact for lighting and a small moonlight as well. Pictures will be coming soon of his tank and of the mantis shrimp so people can help me identify him. I did buy a bunch of snails and hermits when I got him. I was not sure what type of food to buy him. Can anyone suggest what foods are best for these little guys? Thanks everyone for your help!

PS Sorry for the bad spelling, I was in a rush.

There is a link from gho in the photography forum. All the information for uploading and posting pictures is there.

Both of my Mantis love to eat the frozen shrimp I feed them (thawed of course). I modified the end of a chopstick to use as a feeding tool for them. I just take half the shrimp and dangle it in front of their caves and they come right out for the shrimp. I caught a glimpse of one of my Mantis in its cave lying on its back with the shrimp in its apendages. I also have some hermit crabs in both of the tanks, but they seem to not have got the appetite for them yet. Just waiting for my ebay snails to come in next week for my Mantis shrimps live food.

What kind...

What kind...

What kinds of shrimp though? I want to give my Mantis Shrimp a really good diet and give him different things.

It's fresh shrimp out of the Gulf of Mexico. Fortunately I live in Louisiana and I can just buy a couple of pounds of shrimp off a local seller on the side of the road. I have also seen my Mantis eat the leftover fish food flakes that the Damsel in one of the tanks does not finish.

I bought...

I bought...

I bought a couple of different types of food today for my new Mantis Shrimp. I got a couple of different shrimp and fish. He seems to love them all, which makes me happhy because now I know I can give him the proper diet by giving him different foods. I also have live food in his tank and I hope he decides to feed on them too. That way he takes care of his claw things. Sorry, I forgot what they are called, but I heard if you only feed Mantis Shrimp frozen food he never uses his claw things and gets ill. He also is not shy at all about taking food from chop sticks. So I will be able to get some good pics of him when I get home. I also just found out today that he is from either Marshals or Fiji live rock, so now I really want to know what kind of Mantis Shrimp he is.
