I have a bryopsis eating Foxface!!!

I'm a very happy camper right now. I went to Eco Reef Aquarium on Monday and picked up a foxface in desperation. I have been fighting bryopsis for about 6 months now. I've picked it out by hand, purchased a green sea hare (which perished), turbo snails, etc. to try to eradicate it to no avail. I had been reluctant to try a foxface, as they tend to be a bit large for my tank (especially when I was still in the 15).

So, I brought home this one Monday and he was the most melodramatic fish I've ever seen. I went to float the bag on the surface of the tank water and he was banging around in the bag like crazy. Then after I finished acclimating him, I gently dropped him out of the bag into the water...while he's still trying to bounce around the bag. He went to the right rear of the tank looking like he was breathing heavy and about to die. I thought "great...bring home a fish, just to sentence it to death." He was in that corner all spotted up and looked like that until late the next day when he found a crevice to hide in. The follwing day (yesterday), he came out to eat spectrum pellets and picked up some from the sandbed. After feeding last nite, I did my usual picking routine with the bryopsis, as I 've heard that sometimes the critters won't eat it unless it's short. Then I get home today to find my new piece of chalice (one that's near death that may or may not come back) on the sandbed. I put it back in it's slot on one of my rocks. It wasn't until I went back a few minutes later that I though the tank looked "lighter" than it did yesterday. Then it dawns on me that there's no green sh*t all over the to rock...awesome! He must have eaten it during the day today.

So, I figure I'll keep him in my tank a couple more weeks or so, then try to trap him and see if someone else needs him for his bryopsis appetite. Chris, maybe? I did see that nasty stuff in your tank the other nite...and this one does eat it...at least the kind I have! I have definite proof. Maybe I'll rent him out...let's see "Rent-A-Foxface...for all your Bryopsis problems."

Kat, I think very highly of foxfaces as algae eaters, IMO if your were to keep one hervivor in a tank i will keep a foxface, they really do a great job at cleaning! I have a normal yellow FF in the 40 tank and a Magnificent in the 210 they are both equally good at keeping all kinds of algae under control.

Thats great to hear. I had a problem also with bryopsis and ended u trying a lettuce sea slug (yellow) and have yet to see any of it appear again. The bryopsis in my tank grew a few inches a week and began to take over the tank just as you described.

thats awesome, you have to love the natural algae eradicating methods. will that fish get to big for the 20? i'd love to get one for my frag tank i think they are really pretty

they do get big, but they don't grow as fast as tangs do, plus, when he is too big you will transfer him to 500g show tank :D

This one's definitely too big for my 20. He's about 3" long. I was waiting and waiting for a small one to come in to one of the LFS I frequent and didn't see any for quite a while. Figured this one would prefer to live in my 20 for now rather than the 10 x 10 cube he was in for the last week or so at the store. He'll move into someone's bigger tank in a couple of weeks or go back to Eco Reef for credit.

He's done a great job and is getting ready to move out next weekend. If anyone has a need...I'll make a deal, otherwise he's going back to Eco Reef. I wanted to keep him in the tank until I knew every bit of bryopsis is gone. There are a couple of little spots of it that are very short pieces, not sure if he's gonna eat it or not. He's also pigging out on Spectrum pellets and Cyclopeze. I'm trying not to feed too much other food to keep him grazing on the rocks.

Actually, he's not super small...that's why I want to give him a new home instead of torturing him in my 20g. He measures about 4" nose to tail (about 3" long body). If someone is interested, I can bring him to the meeting on Tuesday. Oh, and I don't think my pm's work...think my popup blocker keeps them from popping up.

Yeah, I'm pretty fed up with the hair algae in my tank... i'm really at wit's ends!! I tried starving the tank of nutrients... no go. Tried cutting the photo-period gradually down -to nearly 1/2 the time now-.... no go (the lack of light nearly killed my open brain coral!)
Tried frequent water changes... no go. Tried Sea hares, but they died, so... no go. Snails are simply ignoring it, so I've given up on them.

I'm about to try a chemical fix, which I hate to do, but I don't know what else I can do to solve this issue. The algae is really nasty and it seems like the more I pick out, the stronger it comes back (even though I'm rinsing my hands whenever I get the strands out).
