I have a question about a light

I want to purchase this reflector http://www.hellolights.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1473 if that doesn't work it's a lumenarc 3 mini from hellolights.com. My question is about the ballast for it. I have a 250w ballast that is attached to the socket of my retrofit. Can I cut the wire where it attaches to the retro and attach them to the wires of the socket that comes with the reflector?

So basically I just want to use my retrofit ballast with this reflector. Is this ok?

If you're thinking about putting that reflector over a 55 gallon, it's going to be way too big.

With regard to wiring the ballast, that sounds right to me. But I've never done it.

the luminarc throws a square, so you'll be wasting alot of light over the front and back rather than spreading along the tank, so yeah, i wouldn't put one over a 55 either.

i have 2 on my tank right now if you want to see them, could probably also yank one and take over to your place to see it in action.

as for hooking to your ballast, yeah just cut your old wires. the lumiarc usually comes with a quick disconnect male plug on it, you can either cut that off and directly wire it, or better for a few bucks you can get the female end to wire to your bare wires. here's a pic of the 'pig-tail adapter' as they call it: http://www.pacificgardensupply.com/products.asp?cat=2

but i'm not sure if it actually does come with the quick disconnect on the wire, since it says 'raw wire'. unless you have an electronic ballast that you plan on mounting on the hood, you definitely want some sort of quick disconnect on it, i'm sure hellolights has a quick disconnect kit in their diy section.

another thing to check is to see if this one has the adjustable or fixed socket. it comes both ways, the adjustable lets you move the bulb in and out to center it, it makes a big difference on really short bulbs. but it's also a pita because the bracket sticks way out the back.

the pfo parallel is a good reflector if you want to throw the light along a long tank rather than a square tank.

I'm assuming that you've got a standard 4' long 55 gallon tank. It's only 12" from front to back, so you'd have a good bit of reflector hanging over the front and back of the tank.

You're best bet is to get a parabolic shaped reflector.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am not putting it over my 55, I was honestly just wondering why it wouldn't work. What you said made a lot of sense, and after reading the discription I realized I should have picked that up. I want to hang it over a 30H. I would probably hang it 12 inches or a little more above the water. Do you think that is a good height? I think that would work. If you think that there is a better reflector for this then let me know. The reason I want to go with this type of bulb and wattage is because I already have a ballast to use.

Any advice is welcome.

Well I guess it would still be too big, but would it work even if I do lose some light? If it's not a good idea what would be a good idea for a reflector?

I am not sure what type it is. It came with the retro fit and I looked and I couldn't find any info on it in the box or anything. I would guess they are magnetic ballasts that came with the retro fit. They are very big and run the mogul based bulbs. They take a few minutes to fire up the bulbs.
