I have a Question

I watched this clip, and as I am wanting a larger tank (not this big, lol) and as I look at some of the tank builds here with plumbing jobs that it would take a rocket scientist to figure out, I wonder why more people don't use this type of pump system to create water flow in their tanks, simple, easy. I am sure there is a down side and that is my question. Its not that I like simple, well yes I do, lol. Simple is better if the job is getting done and there aren't any bad down sides.

Cost

Cost

That's pretty much the short answer, Strout. The MP40W's cost about $420 each.

I have a pair of them in my 350G and they actually do a great job. They supplement the closed loop which runs in the daytime hours...

If you're planning a large tank, keep them in mind. You wouldn't be disappointed, IME.

My tank, when I get it will be somewhere between 260g & 300g DT, water in the sump will be extra on top of that. This might be the way I might go. I figured the reason I was going to get against this was because of the heat issue the Vortechs might put in the water. But if I went CL, I could buy more corals, lol.

Very little heat in the water, because the pump motor is on the OUTSIDE of the glass, not in the water... it is air-cooled rather than water-cooled...a good thing, IMO.

When I put my 375 system together I pondered - closed loop or not - for quite a while. I finally decided against it. For two main reasons: 1. I don't really like the look and complexity of a large tank with closed loop. You've got PVC pipe going "every which way", and 2. Since I have a glass tank, I wouldn't really have felt comfortable having all the necessary holes drilled in the back and bottom panes. Just me.

I chose to go with 4 Tunze streams. I must say, I'm glad I did.

Thanks for your thoughts GlassReef, your points are the same ones going thru my head also. I will check out your red house.
