well my wife has said that I could get a new tank/tanks.....yeah

I am looking at either 2 75 gallon or a 120 all rr. which would you get? either way the 2 or the 1 will be reef tanks. I was thinking going with the two since i am a zoa/ric freak and the other being a all sps reef.

but in the mean time I did buy some really nice frags from a semi local guy and i pick them up sunday. for now they will be housed in my 24g nano. so I need to upgrade pretty quick

what do you think of the frags....

pics are from the seller I will be getting them from and were taken under 400w 20k ushio bulbs. I hope they do good under my 150w 14k.

Nice fraggs! Who did they come from if you don't mind me asking?

I know from experience just go as big as you can and get 1 tank!! To Each is own as they say but in my experience water changes and equipment for multiple tanks can get old fast! Problem is when I was new to the hobby I wanted 1 of everything and set up tanks all the time. And trust me I was the queen of multiple tanks only topped by Waynesworld  But now Brian and Moriah are a close running compainion for the most tanks in one home honor!! ;). I think they have the most gallons per square foot covered in one room for sure ;).

All kidding aside, I would go as big as you can and make it a mixed reef. Fishdoc11 over in ETRC has a beautiful example of a nice mix of sweet SPS and zoas/rics in the same tank.
You can buy nicer equipment for the 1 tank than trying to split your budget over 2 tanks with ATO's, skimmers, new light bulbs every 8-12 months, salt for water changes, power heads, Ect. ect.... Just the cost of the second tank with lights would get you some sweet equipment to make your 1 big tank much more easy and enjoyable ( ATO, tunzes, controller for example). And as a general rule you can pick up used larger tanks pretty cheap if you just wait on the deal to come along. "Most" people grab up 75 gallons and under for lots of uses but bigger tanks are harder to sell I think. I just got a super nice 120 ( I know... I know... after I tell you get only one tank but its gonna be a FW for my kid .... I keep telling myself....) for a steal. Wayne got a super deal on a 180 recently and I just sold my 270 for about 45-48% of retail of what I just paid 2 years ago! Deals are out there so my advise is be paitient and wait for a deal on a tank as big as your house can handle. You also will be less limited to your fish list with a bigger tank since most of us love tangs for example but a 75 is just way to small for most tangs.

Also some other unsolicited advise is to save up and buy the best equipment your budget can handle from the beggining. If only I had done that from the start! I could have had a Aquacontroller Jr. 10 times over probable for the money I spent on timers and wavemaker devices for all the different tanks I ran. I KNOW I have at least $100 in those $10-15 appliance timers laying around! But constant upgrades is a right of passage in reefing world! Good luck and check craigslist often also!

Wow! Great looking corals, Mike! Congrats on the new tank/s!

Whats the second coral?

I would personally do one 120 just because it would be less equipment, but I would also try to keep my 45 that I have now to setup as a seahorse tank. I like mixed tanks, though. :)

If we get a town house, I'm going to try to talk my wife into at least let me get a 90 or 120. But we'll see... she may not give in! :)

hi angela...you make a lot a sense with just running one tank...well 2 I will stil have my 24g nano. but it does make more sense for one big tank. so i will probably just go with that 120rr i have been eyeing.

the frags came from a semi (60 miles away) local reefer that sells on ebay. his seller id is the aquaden. the ones i am really proud of are the ora miami orchid and the tidal zone blue zoas.

when I get the big tank I will be using him to get my skimmer and stuff from he is a octopus skimmer dealer and can get me some really good deals. he also is a dealer for metal halides but i forget which ones.

thanks for the advice
mike

p.s That 29rr I got from you at the swap never made it off the ground but I did pass it along to another reefer so maybe it has water in it by know. gave him the same deal you gave me FREE

hey whats up brandon? reactor still going strong I hope? I will do a 120 maybe a little bigger if I can find a good deal on one. the second frag is an ORA Miami Orchid MY first Ora coral I hope I don't kill it

Yeah, man! Its still doing great. :)

Yeah, you need a 240g. You'll be much happier in the end. :D  I really am shooting for a 240g, but all in due time. ;)

That coral is beautiful, man! They all look good, but that one almost looks rainbowish. Very cool. I'm sure you'll do fine with it. :)

I Thought that was you. I LOVE the corals you got from him. I am planning a mixed reef with SPS, LPS and ric/zoes for my new tank. Also, I would recomend getting a tall tank if you can find one. I just love the boxier look of them in a 120 size range but then you loose the little extra lenghth for tang swimming room so its a trade off.
You know glass cages is pretty darn reasonable on there new prices compaired to other manufacturers and if you can make your own stand you would be set. But you know all the things you hear about them you may have to deal with from grouchy employies to sloppy silicone work but you just can't beat the price IMO. My new tank is from them just like my old one was, same exact size just the overflows are in different places!!

I think the 120 is a great choice since its total footprint is not really much bigger than a 75 gallon. Keep us posted on what you find :).

brandon....It was listed as a miami orchid but I will get a pic as soon as it get it in the tank to see what it looks like under my lighting

A regal is one that is better suited for a shorter tank I am thinking... Someone correct me if I am wrong :).

On a smaller than you want tank note I know a guy selling a 80 gallon bowfront. It actually was my old tank and I think he painted it black FWIW :). Let me go see what he was asking just as a FYI....

Its a marineland 80 BF RR if you wanted to google it to see a pic of the style.

angela....the listing is in cincinatti....did you forget i'm in ky?

http://nashville.craigslist.org/fur/681152629.html
Another good deal.. Just go to nashville craigslist and type in aquarium. I see many good deals on there today, ussually craigslist tanks are crazy... Yea, I have a 29 gallon tank for $125.00.... Or a NICE 55 gallon for $550.... Sad thing is a good freind of mine sold a very nice 90 for a crazy good price (like $900) which was a good deal over retail price if the gal went in finns but not so good of a deal after you have been in the hobby awhile and know how to find the good deals. I was a victem of not knowing how cheap tanks can be used. The exact same 80 BF I listed a few posts up for sell for $250 Was my first big tank and I gave.................$1,000.00 for about 5 years ago!! She knocked off $100 since I gave her my 29 gallon set up with stand and I traded in her FW fish for about $150 worth of store credit at finns but still, what a sucker I was! That was way before I knew about RC and MTRC but in all honesty it was a $1,600 set up retail so I thought I was getting a real deal at the time and I did save money over LFS prices.

Wow have we derailed this thread or what? Sorry, I have too much time on my hands today, obviously!

I was thinking that you were over the line but not sure how far up there.

The all glass tank retails for $525 new... Just looked :)
ASM skimmer G3 goes for about $300ish ..rock skimmer sump... sounds like a good deal. Just need a pic of that stand to see if its but ugly or not. BTW I Loved my ASM skimmer and am looking for a g4 or 5 for my new tank.

you guys should have seen my inbox when i posted my tanks on craigslist.......$100 was a great deal for a 46 BF or 55......i could have sold them for a little more...but i was wanting it out asap....i even had people asked if the tank was cracked/leaking/or other probs because it was priced so low.....had to tell most of them to come and look for themselves that everyone is good and working

of course, i had to buy a new tank with that money...got me a nice 90 from CKreef today....and whew im tire......and thanks mikemartinez for all the help

Congrats, John! I would like to shoot for a 90 when/if we move. We'll see. :)
