After playing around with a swing arm for 5+ years, I finally bought a refractometer. My swing-arm is still only around 0.003 s.g. off compared to my new refractometer, but the results vary unless you are very meticulous about filling it up with all bubbles removed. My s.g. had drifted down to about 1.024 this time. Not too bad. Before I realized how bad my swing-arm was, I had run a steady 1.021 for a long time (causing all my zoanthids to close up and new corals to die within a week or two of adding them).
Odd how such a simple thing as making sure you have the right specific gravity by testing with the right instrument does not get hammered into you more when you are starting out.
