I made a big mess !!!

I just found another blob in the kitchen on the ugly vinil (spelling) I planned to replace but she did not want me to touch. I guess I might be doing the Pergo thing soon.

Anyone wanna help?

BK

God, I keep reading "pergo" as "prego" and thinking...."kids are not going to solve this problem. What is he thinking?"

I'll help you. I did a ton of mine. (didn't have the time to finish so had to have the company finish)

Anyway, #1, don't do pergo. Do a laminate but there are 2 other companies out there with much better products and a MUCH larger selection. I owe you anyway :D

How big is the room? I be you'd be suprised. We could probably get it done in a few hours if the room is prepped. Shoot me a PM

I'll make my mind up in the next couple of weeks.

While we are talking construction: How can I tell if a wall is load bearing or not without blue Prints and digging in?

BK

Load bearing will usually transfer weight all the way to the foundation. So if the joists above it are being supported by the wall then under the wall will be a beam in the basement or another wall on the floor below it. That is not a hard and fast rule but is usually correct...loads must transfer to the foundation either with a beam or a wall in the same place in every floor. If this is a condo then all bets are off and you need the blueprints.

I was able to do that in my old place and it was very easy. Now since this is a Villa type of condo( stand alone unit sandwiched between two others) and only has one floor and a attick I don't know. I was in the attick last night and it looks like the all the walls in the place are nothing buid dividers since the joists are going straight across to the concrete walls on each side of the place...

I would like to take out part of the wall between the kitchen and the living area...It would open up the space and I could get an island/bar there...The plan is to build in a tank but don't tell the wife.

BK

If there's a wall that runs right down the center of the building perpendicular to the joists/trusses, that is in all likelihood a bearing wall.

BK, according to Mayo and Jack's comments and my memory of your place, I think that the wall you want is safe

obviously you need to get it checked out, but IM just trying to fuel some excitement for you

PS: Ive never done this stuff before, but want to learn before I get my first house, so if you choose to DIY, let me know and I"ll be there with a FUBAR and beer

Sounds like a plan. I have you to help me mess up the wall and Justin to do the floors.

If anyone else feels the need to swing around a hammer while intoxicated please let me know lol.

BK

Rather than doing all of that construction just put a small cube everywhere there is a stain. A little 5 gal in the kitchen, and a 30 gal in the basement.

IF that doesn't work, I am willing to help you drink one of these weekends, i mean work.

I was looking at the options and it looks like the kitchen wall I wanted to take out is going to have to stay where it is.

I'm looking at about $2500 for the new floor. If I do the whole place. If I leave the kitchen and bedrooms it's about half... Eighter way it looks like a drunken weekend worth of work for a few of us some time soon...
