Is Sailing the Seas
I have been on a mission this afternoon to find southdown. It is now yardrite tropical playsand. Im working on trying to get a pallet transferred to a local store here. I have to talk to the building materials person in the morning. I dont want to get anyones hopes up as of yet but anyone interested that will really get it let me know how many bags you want so I can get a number together.
Thanks
Jason

What's so special about this sand? I'll be looking for sand for my 75g very soon...

It's cheap, and if you get the right stuff it is calcium carbonate (not silica sand).

I'm in for a few bags if you can get a pallet in.

Have you read where not all yard right is actually calcium carbonate Jason? I think it was also sold as old castlel at one time maybe. I also did many hours or reaserch trying to get some awhile back is when I ran across the info that not all yardright is actually the right kind. Some is just plain ol silica.
Oh and if you get your hands on the right kind I would definetly be in for 6-12 baggs. I know we are moving within 2 years and it will probably just be another 2-4 year home to flip. I bet I get real tired of moving that big heavy tank by then!!

that's true angela. Yardright has several types they bag. The bag will say "from the Caribbean" on the front. When I looked through there product catalog, each type of sand has it's own graphics. The calcium based stuff has a cartoon child with a play shovel on the front.

Is this better than Aragamax, or just cheaper?

Certianly cheaper. It is also much more fine and I've seen it create a bit of a sand storm in a tank with a lot of flow. That being said, I could go in for up to 5 bags.

It is the right size grain if you plan on running a DSB. It can cause a sandstorm if the flow hits it wrong. I had to adjust my flow pattern a little because it kept erroding the sand away in spots over time.

Agree with that. I dont know what the deal is. I'll get my flow dialed in and 2 weeks later the sand decides to start flying everywhere. Reset with a different pattern and repeat the same 3 weeks later.

It looks great though and is the perfect size for a dsb. However, if I had it to do over again, I think I would go the BB/Starboard route.

have y'all checked quikrete (sp?) I was at Home Depot this evening. Remembering this thread, figured I'd check out the sand. They had 2 kinds of quikrete. One was all purpose (i think that was the name), it actually had a warning lable saying contains silica. Then they had a premium quikrete play sand. Had a kid playin in a sand box. It didn't say anything about silica. Just lettin' you know if anyone wants to research it. It was like $3.50 for a 50lbs bag
