i need a big skimmer for a 2500 gallon holding system (not a reef tank)

fish will be cycling in and out weekly, so i want a skimmer to take out all the crap so i dont have to do 4 water changes a week! (i still do 1-2)

I would like to make one, because i can't really aford to buy one at the moment (still building the system)

Are there any systems out there that have a DIY skimmer, that didn't cost "a lot" (i use this term loosely.. lol)

Thanks for the help!

I built one that works great and only uses 120W. You can see pics of it by clicking on the red house and then on skimmer. It is a real DIY unit that you can make yourself with just basic tools.

I feel all those skimmers are under powered for what i need to do. How do you tell how much a skimmer can handle if its DIY?

jnarowe, thats very cool! Is it an insump skimmer? i need and extrnal skimmer. is your system a 1000 gallon total capacity?

I would also say that I wouls PM Spazz. He is the master when it comes to skimmers for large systems. I know he working on several skimmers for tanks over 2000 gallons right now and he is doing it very efficiently.

My skimmer is in-sump but doesn't have to be. I just put it in the sump for convenience. It is fed directly from the overflow and the output goes into my out-bound sump. It could be anywhere in my tank room if needed.

The display is 1000g and the sump, skimmer, and fuge bring it up top about 1,200g+. The skimmer itself holds 50g.

Here is a pic of one of the stone assemblies. There are two and I have changed out the elbows for larger ones.

Another option would be mazzei injectors. I have them and they work flawlessly. You do need a mildly pressure rated pump. I use a Velocity t4 which will run a 12 gallon capacity skimmer.
