I need a fish nutrition EXPERT!

Well the food I originally questioned about is a food which comes from a curator at a very prestigious facility...It was actually developed by him...

What's the facility name if you don't mind me asking? Is this fellow a friend of yours? I assume you don't personally know him else you wouldn't be asking here, but it is worth a shot :)

his name is jim prappas......he is now the head biologist of landrys restaurants....it is only my speculation (through research) that this is the origin to make a long story short

I guess I wasn't terribly specific here LOL. Are you able to talk to him about this formula at all? I don't think I follow why a restaurant needs a biologist formulating their fish food?

EDIT: After rereading you say "he is now the head biologist..." I guess that may have nothing at all to do with the fish food, just a qualification of his?

Landrys restaurants is a huge restaurant change which own many different restaurants, and have HUGE tanks ina lot of them, ever heard of "rainforest cafe'" Yeah he is that guy, formerly the lead marine biologist of 2 other huge public aquariums that I know of. I do not no him personally...

Ah ok, so he takes care of their tanks. Yeah I have been to a few rainforest cafes. Some were amazing, some were not (speaking of their tanks of course). Had never heard of Landrys though. How did you get a hold of this formula? Or was it sold retail as something that Prappas came up with?

Well, I was trying to not tell this story, bu here goes. I have an affiliate who owns a large aquarium store. I do not know him that well, but we have a common friend which reccommended to me that I try this new gel food. The guy who owns the store is apparantly good friends with Prappas, and he is to my knowledge the only person who can get the food from him. The food is now being sold by the owner of the aquarium store to only a select amount of people ie. he owns who have some pull with him ie. our mutual friend. I am not supposed to know that prappas was the designer of the food, becasue they wanted to keep it secret probably because they can make some money off of it, and they will have exclusive rights this way. I did a lot of investigative work and found out that he is probably the original source of the food(prappas) although as stated before, im not positive.

Now I'm jyust trying to figure out if it is worht the money or not buying an exclusive fish food, which may or may not work wonders.

Personally if it is much more expensive than say Hikari brand Mysis, or Cyclopeeze flakes I wouldn't bother. My fish go nuts for both of them, plus New Life Spectrum pellets. Those 3 are very high quality foods,IMO.

right, but maybe notas high quality as this, and also fish going nuts for something doesn't mean that it's good fro them. I love dunkin doughnuts but that ddoesn't mean that should be my regular diet.

A start would be to know whats in the food. You cannot compare them without knowing.

Yes, but those products I listed clearly state the ingredient list, which are not equivilent to "junk food".

That is interesting to hear. I wonder if Purina has done any of the research or case studies on nutrients in fish before. THAT would be a company that can afford it. I think I will look more into that on Monday.

There has been plenty of research done on aquatic diets, Im sure Purina has funded their fair share. If you want to take a look at the Purina products, its best to start with a search for "Mazuri Gel Diet" Here is their aquatics site:

Here is a google scholar search that should get you started:

Good luck!

I guess what I am trying to say that if that food is repackaged Mazuri diet it has been my experience that they are well respected for nutritional value. It just worries me that you say "expensive" as gel diet is usually pretty affordable.

Oh yeah, I used to make it in 5 lb batches. Its great stuff, but like I said, it can cloud the water, especially if you dont make it right or with especially agressive fish. In big public aquarium systems with commercial filtration, it gets out of the water column pretty quickly. On smaller tanks, including reef tanks, I was never much of a fan solely on the fact that it seemed to kill protien skimming for a few hours and turned the water brownish. It is good for the fish though, it is a traditional food for quarantine and acclimation as well as during med treatment.

Personally I like(d) to use omega one and formula one pellets. Seems to me that more of the food got in the gut. Soaking frozen mysid shrimp in Reef Plus was popular too.

Thanks for the links. I am more interested in the specific research trials done on nutritional needs of fish if they exist.

EDIT: actually this http://www.alr-journal.org/index.ph...129&url=/articles/alr/pdf/2003/06/alr3006.pdf is a pretty good link found through google scholar. Thanks for the tip.
