I need a pump!

Does anyone have a decent QuietOne or Ehiem (or something of the like) that can be used EXternally? I am running a Mag 7 right now and it's just TOO DANG LOUD! It's also connected to the bulkhead in the bottom of the tank with hard PVC, so I'm sure that isn't helping.

If you don't have one, can you at least recommend a good one to get that isn't $200?

It's for a 29g by the way.

Thanks,
Ryan

I got a QuietOne 3000 for my 45. It was only like $40 and can be used externally. The Critter has them... not sure about EBay or not, but tomorrow would be a good time to check. :D

Ryan,

careful with those quietone's. I had a 4000 that melted the carpet when I used it externally. LOTS OF HEAT.

just a word of caution.

Ryan, not totally sure since I have my mag 9.5 submerged, but lets just say when I moved, I felt terrible about teh spot on the carpet it left. once in the new house, I placed a piece of ceramic tile underneath it just to be safe, and then replaced it about a month later. It was also extremely loud since i used it for a CL and I had to throttle it back to create back pressure. the QO pumps have large cooling fins, but with no air curculation, mine got HOT. they also have a large heat transfer chamber for the water and it definately warmed my tank. I now have a true external pump and get a ton less heat transfer and no carpet melting.

My eheim has been rock solid and I know it was running for quite a while before I got it. It's a 1262, but I'm using it on a 90. I haven't heard anything bad about the smaller ones.

I haven't done a lot of research on the Quiet Ones, but a 4000 I got as part of a tank buy restarted correctly perhaps less than 50% of the time. It was supposedly brand new, but I can't verify. I have since heard that this is a common problem. I'm always up for hearing more opinions, but this is just my experience.

Quiet Ones, if you believe most of the comments, are a misnomer - not very quiet. And as DMBillies mentions, they tend to have restart problems. I have used several Eheims but all of them internally. I believe the smaller pumps are big with the silent PC crowd. They are used to liquid cool PCs. They are also used on recirc skimmers from Deltec and others so I think they would work fine external. I have a new in box 1260 as a backup return pump that I'd like to keep, but might could be persuaded to let go. It would be similar in flow (maybe a bit more) than the mag 7. They are not the cheapest of pumps, though...

Thanks for the warnings on QuietOne pumps...I think I'll go for an Eheim...but are there options for the connections to an Eheim? I have PVC connected to the pressure side.
