I need Bio Balls

I know some of you just have them and dont use them. I need a bunch of bio balls at a reasonable price. ALOT. Thats for my next experiment. The High compression pressurized denitrator.

lol sounds terrifying. I've got maybe 2.5 gallons worth of them at home probably. I just need to find them and clean them off.

There's a lot of debate about it, but the short answer is that while they're extremely efficient at reducing ammonia to nitrate, they can collect particles of crap from the water column and then create ammonia while breaking it down to nitrate at the same time, and hence they get the name "nitrate factories" because they're so efficient at breaking ammonia down, while being filled with ammonia releasing particles.

well all they do is convert ammonia(NH4,NH5) which comes from decomposing waste and organics, to nitrite No2 which is still toxic, however they also break down nitrite to nitrate n03 which is necessary for corals at minute levels. but because all they do is create nitrate, they are considered detrimental, live rock and live sand do the same function as bio balls,

in large live rock or in deep sand beds, some areas able to go anerobic( oxygen deprived) and in that zone a bacteria can grow which can break down nitrate, but this process is very slow and does not make a large impact if you have a large bio load.

refugiums are much better IMO, IME as a filtration system with a well working skimmer.

from what ive observed these types of systems can keep nitrates to a minimum in most cases, however if you tanks is over stocked with fish and over feed, you need to compensate with a much large skimmer or filtration system.

I will take them the way they are. How much ?

So should I take out my bio balls from my filter or leave them in and rinse them off every once in a while?

Steve, considering how far you're driving, I'll give them to you. Of course a frag or homebrew would be appreciated too.

I forgot to mention the only caveat is that I will not be home until next Friday.... So if you find someone else who has some before then, feel free to take theirs. I'm up at school still and my last final is next Thursday.
