Hello, does anyone know where I can buy a lot of sand..Im trying to fill my 400 gall tank and would like to know if I can buy the HD or Lowes play sands...or does anyone have some sand they want to get rid of ...thanks

Mike the HD and Lowes play sand sold on the east coast is usually aragonite, however the sand sold on the west coast is silica. Look into www.purearagonite.com. That is the sand that most of mine is. It is pure white.

or you could always go barebottom :D and put in some starboard ;)
that route would save you some money. If you like that look. Personally I don't nor would I suggest it. too many down sides.

sand vs. bb ; either you like it or you dont the down sides are equal.

True.

If your really interested in alot of sand let me know and Ill pm you a hardwares stores # that carries white sand and is sterilized and no silica I used it in my 60g, no side effets only down side is that its pretty tiny can pass as sugar sand, no side effetcs. I dont know if you ever got to see my 60g but its really white and only 8.00 for 50lbs!

Unless you dont plan on doing massive nutrient export by other means besides biological filtration then I'd use a sandbed. If not ,and you are ok on regular maintenence then id' go with BB setup. That is just an opinion, but there are many of those when discussing such topics.

I guess then It would come down to what equipment you are using.

Sand is nice, I often consider on my next tank to use sand..... $0.02

thank you all for the advice...it is very much so appreciated...but, before this becomes another BB vs DSB debate I have definitely made up my mind on having a sand bed..it just looks a lot more realistic to me and I love seeing gobies and other critters sift through the sand....thanks again and if anyone knows where to get the stuff cheap please PM me or post a reply....

the play sand sold at Lowe's and HD is silica sand which would not harm the tank inhabitants but it will not give you the same benefits as argonite such as buffering capacity

Greg, Im not sure if the link is working properly. Is the web address correct?? thanks for the info

Hey Mike I got a few PM's for the sand from a few people. I will drop by the hardware store tommorow after school and see how many bags are in. They always keep like 20-30, but I think theyll sell cheaper maybe like 3.00-2.00 if yall go in and get it together simply because no one buys it.

Ill get a little card and all with adress and number ull be 1st to know. C-ya;)

ok everyone, I did some sluething I called the hardware store and found out the sand is paragon play sand..it comes in a white bag and the sand is really white and fine...I did a search and found out that Home Depot carries the stuff...According to Sam there are no side effects so lets see how it does.....if anyone has any experience with this sand please chime in now...thanks

I can assure you that the HD stuff and hardware stuff is not the same. I compared both sands. HD's sand looks brown, youll neeed MH lighting for it to look white.Wither than that they are both sterilized and both carry bags of non-silica sand or those with it.

Mine was white all the time, PC lighting looked super white! All the time.

For a while the sand will need to settle in and sit, a skittish fish can cause a sandstorm if you dont let the sand settle in. After that, it becomes more dense and it wont go all over the place.

PLEASE RINSE SAND! AND HAVE A FILTER SOCK!!!!!

Good Luck

Sam

Thanks Sam, I did notice that HD sells two different types of Paragon Play Sand..One is brown and in a clear bag and the other is white/ white bag....the white sand is really fine...Im gonna try it out and possibly mix it with some aragonite for texture.....thanks again sam for the info...

i have some live sand if anyone needs some...its from 1 year old tank - dont have much but it could be good for seeding a new sand bed
