i got some rock from the pit that i work at, and i dont know how a just clean it and what other things should i do to it before putting it into my tank. can i pressure wash it and/or bleach it. any advice would be great.

I would bleach it, treat it with prime afterwards until you don't smell bleach any longer, and then I would highly suggest curing/cooking it in a container of saltwater for a while, then testing that water to see if anything bad leaches out (ammonia, phosphates, etc).

I'm sure there are people who throw quarry rock in their tank, no problem, and have success doing so. I wouldn't even think of it.

If only you could place your own rocks in the ocean, let them sit for a few months, and then re-harvest them :(

thanks for the advice i know a guy comes with a dump truck and fills the truck with rock and sets it out in the ocean and sells it but i never get a chance to talk with him.

yea. assuming he does it legally and legitimately, then he paid a huge ammount of money for a permit back when they were selling them, and now he farms them and makes a boatload of money. Like tampa bay saltwater (who do have great rock by the way).

Definitely put it in the saltwater and check for phosphates...I've also posted previously about the leaching this type of rock can do. I tossed two suspicious rocks because I kept getting strange types of algae and haven't had any outbreaks since I got rid of it (it was picked up on a beach). Bullredchaser can also attest to this. If you can soak it in sw for a while until your phosphates come down, then you should be good.

in FW i used to bake my rocks in the oven (at 450) after rinsing them ...is that something that can be done here?
