I need two good books

Without paying more than a $100.00 what two books would you purchase. One for corals and one on fish. Has there ever been a poll for this question??

Aquarium Corals by Eric Borneman and The Conscientious Marine Aquirist by Robert Fenner are good starting points. If you want concise "just the facts" for differing species, The Handbook of 500 Marine Fishes by Scott Micheal and The handbook of 500 Marine Invertebrates by Ron Shimek are good too. After you get through these, Anything else from the above authors and ANYTHING from Julian Sprung are good. Best of luck.

Agreed. Other then the 500 marine Inverts book, I have all that were mentioned and they are all great books. You won't go wrong with any of the choices. The 500 Marine Fishes book is exactly what was stated. A quick guide to get you started on a fish you might enjoy. You'd want to research more before buying them, but atleast the book gives you a good starting point. I usually have it sitting next to me any time im on a website searching/reading about Marine Fish.

I second the Borneman 'Aquarium corals' book. Very informative.
I disagree with some of the Sprung books. The early 'Reef Notes' are very outdated IMO.
For fish ID (not care) the "World Atlas of Marine Fishes" by Kuiter and Debelius is the definitive book.

Jenga:

I like the "PocketExpert Guide to Marine Fishes" by Scott W. Michael for fish.

This book covers a lot and is very informative.

Agree!

Agree!

I absolutely agree on the Corals book by Borneman. It is superb.

The Sprung/Delbeek books, "The Reef Aquarium", volumes 1-3 are good resources and can be found used at reasonable prices. Volume 1 and 2 are a little updated, but volume 3 corrects that.

Finally, the "Reef Secrets" by Nilson/Fossa is pretty good as well.

These are not "step by step" guides, but provide a good grounding, encouraging you to think for yourself and moving forward in a sensible informed way..... they purposely let alot open to interpretation and assume that you can use your own head in applying the information within, rather than hand only spoon fed rules and guidelines which really is not the way forward in the hobby, in my view.... because ther're really not rules in the hoby, its just about the application of common sense.
