I Spy 3 -- More Refinements

In any event, you are CORRECT! :bounce1::bounce1::bounce1:

Ich / Ichthyophthirius multifiliis <---( 4 'i's, don't know whys. )

Ich lives in most aquariums. Believe it! Fish have natural defenses that keep them safe from the parasite, but when fish become stressed, their natural defenses become compromised and the parasite can take hold. Once this happens an outbreak will occure and even your healthy fish become vulnerable.

Ich is a protazoan parasite with a 3-stage life-cycle. For two of these cycles, the Ich parasite lives within a hard shell and is thus immune to treatment. It is only in its free-floating stage that it is vulnerable to medications. It is important to understand this when treating an outbreak.

Here is some good additonal information.

The pic and genus name you provided are for FW ich. SW ich is cryptocarran irritans, which is what the link to Chuck's website is but it shows forbidden to me as well atm :( crypto has a 4 stage life cycle if I remember right.

jenglish, thank you for this important clarification. I did not realize there is a difference, but you are right. I chose a freshwater species for my riddle. My bad!

There seems to be a great deal of similarity between them, life-cycle included, but I'm wondering if you could clarify one thing regarding the information I've given. Does the marine variety of ick live in most aquariums without outbreaks, or just the fresh variety?

Thanks again for your help. :)

Packersfan has not responded. Does anyone else wish to riddle?

Well, true ich and crypto have very similar life cycles. Many people have it in their tank for years w/o having visible outbreaks. The parasite just goes through its life cycle in small numbers and tends to infect the gills and not show flakes all over the body. Whethor the crypto does damage or is uncomfortable with these sub clinical levels of infection is debated. It is not always in a tank but many people do have it. It is curable and w/ proper acclimation you can avoid ever putting it back in. HTH

Okay, thank you for this, that's what I wanted to know.

BTW, want to riddle? Riddling is open.

Okay, here's the dealy-o...

It is natural for this thread to slow down on the weekends, but it is Monday now and I don't predict things are going to really pick up. This thread has been fun, it has been educational for me, and I've enjoyed the friendly experience each of you has added. Now I am forced to make a decision and want your input.

Isrealnajar is in the lead and only 1 point away from the prize at +9. I could declare a winner now, or... we can go to sudden death. What is sudden death?

Sudden death works like this...

I will select a captive-reef life-form and periodically give out clues. Players are not allowed to ask any questions. There is no limit to the number of answers a player can guess, however, each player can only guess once after each clue. A photo is not required and a steal is not possible. This will continue until a player reaches +10 on the current scoreboard.

What say thee?

I think sudden death deserves a shot. Lets call it death with dignity. ;)

I'll come up with something and start the thread tomorrow. See you then!
