I spy

I started seeing what looks like tiny pink sand dollar looking things here and there in my tank. Some in the overflow box; some on the rock; on an ER air line, and a couple on my frogspawn stem and rock (which I removed). And I haven't added a thing to the tank except water changes and top off water. They seem to develop into a maroon/red leafy algae (I'm guessing).

Can anyone tell me what this is for sure, and do I need to be concerned?

Also, there's a few spots where I have a few spots of bubble algae. I can remove it from the power heads and other removable items in the tank if it shows up there, but I don't know how to get rid of it off the large rock that won't come out of the tank. I know not to bust the bubbles under water.

Any ideas on how to get rid of it beside the type of crab that eats it.

How do these things happen when nothing has been added to the tank -- live stock, rock or otherwise.

The tank is a living bio-mass of sorts that seeks a balance at all times. Older tanks will mature and you can see many macro algaes spring up from nowhere at all when certain conditions are met. It's evolution of a mature reef tank 101 and you will see many thing emerge if a tank survives long enough.
