My blue hippo tang has frayed tail fin and a red spot on the tail. My clown is also showing a little bit of gills. I started prazipro in the tank a week ago but the condition has only improved a little bit. Is it flukes or something else. Also should I redose with prazi or try something else.
No dip. I read a thread here on RC where the guy described all the symptoms. Also that night I saw hippo tang shaking its head. Now the shaking is gone but the fins are still frayed and a little redness exists.
Are you dosing in the main tank? Are any other fish showing symptoms? From what you describe it sounds like flukes but it can help to do a dip to be able to ID the fluke. The dip also gives the fish some relief.
I would do a water change and redose. Then in 4-6 days do another water change and redose again. The eggs (if it is an egg laying fluke) are not killed by Prazipro and they hatch within 4-6 days, depending on water temp. One dose of Prazipro usually will not wipeout marine flukes in one treatment.
I don't really want to do a fresh water dip. It stresses the fish a lot. Any other way of confirming what kind of bacteria it is. How can I fix it. All the fishes eat like a champ and are very active.
Flukes are not a bacteria. They are a parasite. You could do a skin scrape but I would only recommend doing this if you have experience. Do you have a marine science center near you? They may be able to help you diagnose the fish. If not your only option is to treat based on observational symptoms.
How many rounds of Prazipro have you done? Do you have access to a praziquantel laced food such as Dr G's DeWormer?
