I want to build a shelf for my water tanks

I am going to be purchasing two 55 gallon tanks (rodi & mixed saltwater) and one 25 gallon tank (ro)

I want to make a vertical shelf to hold them. So there would be 3 shelves with one tank on each shelf. Here are the two options I found to build this.

The first is using the metal corner things to attach the wood
and the second is from this build: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=21291836&postcount=9 He has each cross beam resting on a 2x4 that goes to the ground.

Would both of these be strong enough to hold when all the containers are full? I just want to make sure it is solid and strong enough.

I certainly agree. I would urge you to use a primer and two coats of exterior latex (or overkill with 2-part epoxy) to protect your stand over time.

What they said. You're only looking at 135 gallons. A properly built 2x4 frame will support way more than that.

Thanks for the responses.

This was the other picture I was supposed to post.

I have built two workbenches using the Simpson Strong Tie connectors in that last pic. They work great and are easy to install. Based on how they are designed, I think they would work great for you.

They would be ok for the outer frame. But it would be a good idea to have a 2x4 under the crossbars as in the first two pictures. That way you aren't relying completely on the nails/screws to hold the weight.
