Will work for fish
Yesterday we introduced a TIGER (black cap) jawfish to our tank... I placed him very carefully towards the sand in hopes he would be comfortable w/ hiding out until he felt safe... he didn't do that.

He went straight to the water line... w/ half his head peaking out... my wife was screaming... OMG OMG OMG, he's going to jump.

Meanwhile "Pokey" was doing laps for a good 20 seconds as I was prepping for a jump and save.

My wife started screaming and then began to freak out and ran away but then stopped and ran back to the tank.

I got so frustrated that I told her to leave the room cuz she was freaking the fish and me out. She left and the fish went down into the caves.

It was scary... do ALL jawfish do this? I thought it was SUPER unique and would've loved to have had it on tape--reality TV moment for us.

Probably... altho it was a pretty mean looking hello haha.

Hey EllieSuz, what kind of a Flasher Wrasse is that in your avatar?

Dude, thanx for the story. Made me laugh.

I have always wondered about this. I do not for a second doubt the stories of jawfish (and wrasses) jumping out.

Why would a fish that normally spends its time under or in the sand want to jump at all?

In the wild these fish are typically found at depth and dont really have the option of exiting the water. In our tanks these newly introduced jawfish do not have established burrows and as such flee for protection. Since most tanks are limited to under 30" of depth, these fleeing jawfish will often exit the water.

thats a really funny story.

reminded me of the time my mom called me while i was in school and yelled to me

"OMG! YOUR RHOMBOID WRASSE JUMPED OUT AND IS ON THE FLOOR! WHAT DO I DO!?"

i told her to put it in a pail of seawater with an airstone. i'll be back in about half hour. my school just ended.

when i came home, i saw my rhomboid wrasse swimming happily in the tank, but inside that pail of seawater, was my brother's snakehead freshwater fish. which had jumped out and she mistook it for my rhomboid fairy wrasse (god knows how).

Haha, yeah, I try my best to teach my wife as much as I can w/o overloading her interest in the hobby... so far she knows how to feed Rod's Food

350 gallon FOWLR, large pocupine puffer that loved to eat anythng thrown into the tank. Wife takes the screen off to feed some large shrimp while I'm at work. Porcupine wants it bad and jumps to take it out of her hand. Bad eyesight, misses and carpet surfs. Wife calls me in a panic. He's blowing up on the floor looking like a basketball. Won't fit in a net and wife won't pick him up. She goes out in the garage, gets the snow shovel and scoops him up and throws him back in the tank. Got to give her credit for thinking outside the box!
