Icefire Echinata?

Yeah, just ran by my LFS Your Reef in Roseville,CA who helped originate the Tyree Ice Fire with Rich and Karl and he told me that they look wild. Guess the key difference is the green base and the "Real" lineaged Ice Fire's don't grow straight out. They are more branchy and they twist, which my little guy looks like:) There are also no large colonies bigger than 4" that are known of. Not even Steve Tyree's colonies are that big.

Glad I haven't made the trade for my lineaged 100 eye BGM and 35 eye BJ chalice colonies. It's one of the reasons why I posted on the forums to double check and make sure because I'm not an expert and I didn't want to sell or trade frags of it without making sure. Puts my reputation on the line too:) Nice pieces, but not worth the trade now.. Appreciate the confirmation.

Hey guys,

I just got an e-mail from the seller and he swears its the Tyree Ice Fire Echinata that he purchased at Baymac in 09' and grew out over the last 2 years. He's also a really nice guy and I don't want to throw him under the bus and I'd like to do the trade, but wanted to see what your guys thoughts are.

Could the Tyree Ice Fire morph from the green base to the white or cream base after changing lighting to LED's. He also fragged the branches off the main colonies and sold them in frag packs, which is true because I almost bought one a few weeks ago.

Do you guys think that these could be Tyree Ice Fire colonies? They're awesome looking and even if they aren't I may still get them, but what I don't want is wild ones that have a 50-70% chance of RTNing on me.

Appreciate your thoughts and expertise. I was a newbie back in 09' and this makes me feel like a newbie again..lol

Personally if I received those as they look in that pic I would be super pumped....they look sweet....whether or not its worth that trade you mentioned I dont know. Personally I like the look of those over the tyree icefire.

My gut is really telling me he is not being truthful. But one way to clear it up is ask for a photo of his mother colony before he chopped it up....it should have a huge base grown to his rock from years of growth. If he can't provide that........be very very suspicious.

Why not just get one, that way you don't have to trade so much? I would also want more pictures as dvanacker mentioned.

I hate to tell you this but I am every bit as close as I can be to being 100% sure that the guy isn't honest in this situation. Those have certainly been imported. FWIW, about a year ago those would have easily gone for $300.00 each.

+1, this is still my ultimate favorite coral!

They look wild to me too. The funny thing is though, is that on tyrees site, the Ice Fire looks more like those with blue tips and more of a white base color. However, all of us who have a true lineage Reeffarmers Ice Fire have blue tips with more of a green/cream color base.

Thanks for the input.. Yeah, its definitely questionable because he said he never took pics of the progression of the coral in his tank over the 2 years he's had it. All I know is I have a crappy camera and I still take pics of my tank..lol If I had a freaking $3,000 coral that I grew from a frag I'd have more pictures of it laying around then of my kids..lol I was also wondering too because I have a 2" large frag of the real deal that I started with 1/2" almost a year ago. I can't picture it growing into two huge 6" colonies in another year and a half. I'll post on here what I'm doing if it does:)

That and several of my friends pointed out that if both pieces were from the same colony how did they fit together and how often do they grow in a V shape. I'm also assuming that there should be a base somewhere and if it was grown in his tank he'd offer to show me pics of the base in his tank. My buddy told me that it sounds like he's probably getting wild aussie corals coming in cheap and trying to off them or trade them for lineaged pieces that are worth more. Appreciate your input and virtually every post and friend I talked to gave me the same recommendation. Don't do the trade:)

Thanks everyone for your responses in the situation. Unfortunately, I think you guys are right and I'm going to back out of the trade.

At least I know my little piece is the Reeffarmers Ice Fire Echinata. I was told that the wild aussie pieces like that go for $100-$150 wholesale and a multi branch one goes for $200-$250 wholesale. That's a frag of Bazooka Joe or a frag of the BGM. Again, thank you guys for all of the help.

Chris

Nice. But is that it's true colors? The photo looks a bit photoshopped:hmm2:

No edits except resizing.. Aimed a low kelvin cfl bulb(sth lower than 5000K I suppose) to decrease the actinic effect when I was taking the photo..Because on macro mode my cams flash is disabled..

By the way one shot with a flash for a clarification..(All of the tanks lights are off, it's flash only when the tank is totally dark)
Not a very good quality picture but I suppose may be it makes ppl start feeling less suspicious.
Hope it helps :)
