My tank (300g) is very new, less than 3 months old. It cycled and I put in my first fish sooner than I really wanted to but did it anyway since a friend was getting out of the hobby and needed a place for his fish to go so I took them. A large hippo, a large naso, a large clown, a small clown, three damsels, a powder brown, 3 lyretail anthias, 3 yellow tangs, two purple tangs, a diamond goby. The tank was not ready and I knew it but got excited and did it anyway. Needless to say, the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels jumped because of the fish load. Then the ich hit and ended up killing 2 lyretails, 1 yellow tang, the powder brown and 1 damsel by the time I got them into a not-ready qt (125g). I then started treating the qt with hypo and copper. Since I was not ready for this and didn’t have a qt ready to go I’m now fighting with the qt cycling in addition to the ich (I’m running a canister filter). Qt has been going on for 3 weeks now with 25% daily water changes to fight the ammonia/nitrite spikes. About a week ago I started fighting the ammonia spike with an ammonia detoxifier. So at this point I’m treating the qt with hypo, copper and ammonia detoxifier (oh, and uv). I found out today that copper and ammonia detoxifier are not to be used together. So I’m continuing to do the daily water changes to get the copper out at the advice of MrTuskFish. However, all fish are doing great and eating big time although I think they are suffering a tiny bit and am not sure if they will last thru the entire treatment (I could be wrong here, however). Question… I’ve done a lot of research on ich on RC and learn something every day. I have read that hypo should be at 1.009 all the time but have not find out what happens if it goes lower, say 1.005 or so. I can understand why it shouldn’t be higher but why not lower as long as the fish are not suffering? Why is 1.009 the magic level?
In the meantime, my dt is hypo too. It is down to 1.005 and is fallow. I’m also running UV here too. Will I have to cycle the dt again because of this? I’m sure most of what I’m asking is in a thread somewhere :deadhorse1: but thought I’d ask my specifics questions and hope for advice.
